I can help add some info. It is a vertical shaft engine. They were mostly used on Craftsman riding mowers. I have one that is the 19.5 hp variant. I think they were made from around 17 hp up to 22 or so. I really like mine. I think it is a much smoother running motor than a VTwin. I believe it is also a flathead motor. Because of the cylinder layout, it has a somewhat long log type intake manifold, similar to the old VDubs. I am quite interested in where this build is going!
Also of note, if it is the same as mine...the original carb actually has the pulse pump built into it.

Can you tell us a little more of your plan on how you are going to run your buggy with this engine??

My guess would involve using a mower transaxle, but not sure if that is what KC is thinking.

Ok, just looked at the pictures on a computer screen. That is a horizontal shaft engine...and definitely not something I have seen before. My old Craftsman has one of these engines, but it is vertical shaft. So Kart useage is an option on this one! One very cool thing I am seeing here is a shorter overall height than a V-twin, which is pretty cool in my book. Of course it probably also has a larger footprint, which creates its own issues. I think more pictures of this motor are necessary!

It is a horizontal. 16 HP Briggs. I'm going with direct drive. Heavy duty Hilliard clutch. They take a beating. Four wheeler rims and tires. Front rotors and calipers from the ATV to. Im thinking putting a carburetor on each head would look really cool. And powerful!!!! I don't see why not. It's a 1988 model. With no issues.

What is wrong with the carb that came off of it ? Does the motor even run? Did you figure out how you are gonna mount it in the yerf dog yet? I would start with some of that stuff first. Carbs can always go on later . Is it really worth putting that much into that engine?

If it's help with the carbs you're after, step #1 is to get them to open at exactly the same rate via linkage or a dual cable, Step# 2 is going to be synching them using a manometer. Multi cyl motorcycles have been doing it this way for ever and it works well. As far as what cable to use or how to set up the linkage, that's on you. Research the living day lights out of it is the best advice I can offer there. Banshee carbs and cable may work for you, I know they're only 350cc, but they're two stroke so they pull an intake charge on every rotation rather than every other. No idea if it'll work, but it seems like a good place to start to me.

The carb that was on it is shot. And ya it started. Then I Tore it down. Got the rebuild kit and going to put back together this week while on vacation. And welding the frame up. I have the mount's all figured out too. I was going to put a two barrel from a vanguard I got. Needs rebuild and fabricate a intake. I only have about 300$ in it with everything so far. With most brand new. And just a project to keep me busy. Lol. And a lot of fun when done.

Still going to need to fabricate intakes . Just a suggestion something like this? And you are gonna need a bunch of jets.

Now that was non-sequitur.
