I need an air cleaner....but no idea which one!

So some students of mine and I are working on an older Carter Brothers cart.....that we picked up in quite the derelict condition.

The carb was completely gone - so we're starting from scratch there.

It's a Tecumseh OH195EA 5 HP engine, and we've located a nice replacement carb.....but I have no idea what we should be using as an air cleaner assembly.

Can anyone steer us in the right direction? Even a photo?

I don't even know where to begin....

I was just looking at that website myself, exploring my options.

How critical is the spacer labeled part "239A" do you think? Looks like it may not be available. Think that piece matters? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm still looking, however. The web is a mighty big place....fingers crossed!

Yea finding that little part would be quite a search. I’m no expert, but I’m sure you would survive without that piece.

Have you looked around to see if there is a small enging repair shop around? My local one has tons of old engines sitting around that you can pick parts off of.

A teckasheema will not function without every single part in that illustration. You are tempting fate to omit anything. Don't give those engines an excuse not to work, they do that just fine without any help.

Dagger. I was on the fence about just tossing in the loot for a brand new Predator 212.....but decided against it at the last minute, hoping to show these boys that old things CAN be brought back to life! Haha! Now I'll get to teach them what humility looks like as well! Hahaha!

Yeah... not worth it to resurrect a Tecumseh. Get a Predator. If you wanna search and may be willing to throw in more $$, get a Briggs flathead. Simplest thing since the twig, and reliable as a brick wall. If you wanna humiliate your students, a Tecumseh's the way to go.
If you wanna know how terrible they are, try plastic camshaft.
Briggs are nice to bring back to life, I've already done one. Although I do need to reassemble the starter today.

Well, since we have the new carb anyway, we bolted it on just to see if she would fire. Wild and raw; no air cleaner and old crappy oil. Yeah - that's how we roll. Living dangerously! Haha.

Believe it or not, she fired up almost immediately. Sounds very good, honestly. Not a race car, but just idled and purred - which is quite astonishing considering she's been sitting outdoors for several years wide open to the elements. Revved up smoothly.

Now, we literally only ran her for 30 seconds or so, knowing that we had no air filter and the oil needs changed.....but that was a sweet 30 seconds!

I'm going to make a few phone calls to some local small engine shops and see if we can scrounge up an air cleaner assembly for cheap. Cheaper would be better as the budget for this project is coming from my wallet...so I'm just trying to keep it realistic - but on the lean side! If we can't find anything, perhaps we will pull the trigger on the Jack's Small Engine assembly...and try and source that small spacer that they're not showing as available.

Cool. Turn down the idle some. I think it is awesome that you are using your own money to help these kids out.

As for running it without an air filter and dirty oil, that's exactly how I first started my Briggs.
Just run that thing into ground, then get a Predator 212. Or a Briggs 5 pony.

Briggs may have used plastic cams even before Tecumseh did, either Predators or clones have in the past, and Honda currently does. Not in all models, but as a broad argument against Tecs it doesn't hold up.

I wouldn't use a Tec OHV for a performance build, but they're generally fine as a stock utility engine.

I still don't feel very comfortable having a piece of plastic push up a 10lb valve spring coated in 300+ degree oil. Points for predator over Honda...at least currently.

The committee of engineers, managers, marketers, quality yahoos, accountants, and untold others that signed off on it (in each company) seemed to be comfortable enough with plastic cams. The ones that did durability testing seemed satisfied and the ones that reviewed the results seemed satisfied. We tend not to like them for what we do because we do things with these engines that the designers didn't design them to do.

We have fun 'wrecking' these poor utility engines. At least in the eyes of the engineers who designed them.

Quick update: no air cleaners to be salvaged at any of the local small engine shops. Plenty of boneyard air cleaner assemblies, but nothing matching what we need. So - we ordered it all from Jack's. Should be here in a few days.

In the meantime, we've been changing the oil, swapping the spark plug, etc.....

The boys were having a good time just changing the oil; one boy even had to film it with his device! Haha. Good stuff.

How do we go about swapping and connecting a throttle cable? We may not even need to swap out our cable, but it definitely needs lubed up right good. Motorbike cable lube? Will that do it? And how do we connect it to the carb throttle? I'll take a few pics of what we're dealing with and post them up. Maybe you guys can steer us in the right direction...

Any good source for tires, while I have your attention? eBay? Amazon? Looks like we're in the $15-25/each for the tires, based on a quick google search. We're looking for 145/70-6 tires, and don't really need anything crazy, but don't want to be swapping tires out every month. Some durable rubber would be nice.

But hey - either way, we are SUPER grateful for your help with all of this! Moving forward!
