Hopefully it'll all make sense once I get the rest of the parts and get it put together. That oil pump is just the power retarder part, the reason for the bearings is to let the pump float so that torque can be measured from it when I load the motor with it.
This is all highly theoretical, but I think it should work. Version 1.0 will just measure torque, after I get my flathead paid for I should be able to afford the software and load cell to make proper graphs on a computer, but the minibike motor is priority #1 at the moment so I'm not coming off of another $600 just yet, plus I want to make sure it works before I do.

Maybe I should have named this thread PAFR: dyno edition....

Trust me, this has nothing to do with thunder. I like to see where my limits are as far as engineering goes (some would call it jerry rigging, but whatever). Sometimes I'm the dog, sometimes I'm the fire hydrant. I figure if I can figure out how to build a low cost DIY dyno that a lot of people could really benefit from it. I figure I have about a 50/50 shot at going down in flames on this one, I just hope you guys don't laugh at me too much if I fail. For better or worse I've bought the ticket, now to take the ride.

You guys will have to wait and see how I plan on measuring torque without that stuff, gonna GAFR for sure.

With respect.... I kinda like the sound of a "Hillbilly Dyno"......... At least that sounds DIY...

PAFR sounds like what it is...... or a fart.......

You roll with the punches and have the muscle to back with your ride.......

Hillbilly it up my friend....at lest your money is where your mouth is ........

After trying to understand this more for these types of motors and what particular verity is used for them..... Is this going to be a what is know as a water brake?

More or less. I'm going to put one of the GX120 tanks on for a fluid reservoir and put a ball valve in the return line (why I need hydraulic fittings) so I can restrict the flow and cause drag on the motor with the floating pump, and measure torque off of the centerline of the pump.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm doing. The first version should be able to be built with all new parts for about $200 if it works like I think it will, but it will only give a simple torque reading if it even works.

I wonder if something like an oldschool beam torque wrench be used instead of load cell.... Kind of analog dyno.
No need to use a computer or the like, hooked up to it..... just a calculator and your tach( a handheld laser or contact unit will do).....

Have you looked at inertia dynos? Seems to be the most simple dyno, haven't build one so I don't know how well they work. :)

I guess with that guy... there isnt a need for a known length of bar to be used in the calculations... the torque applied, is what is applied.......
Attach a short ratchet extention to the input of the torque box.... Have a piece of pipe welded with a cheap matching socket to the output for the torque bar.....

I have, and the software is free for them. It's actually called simpledyno and it's for R/C cars, but it looks like it would work really well with any inertia dyno.

That said, I wanted a brake type so I could vary the load, and make as long and slow, or as short and fast of a pull as I want. That, and I don't like the idea of a 300lb steel wheel at high rpm anywhere near me.

Mind you... just had a quick gander at the price of hydraulic pumps...... crikey... thems pretty expensive....
I reckon tis why buddy went with the one out of a truck.
