Update... I acquired a replacement engine (same 212) for $102.00 at HF on Friday. Pulled the old engine out today.

It definitely still has (had) oil in it.
Curious to know if perhaps a bearing went bad or something?

I've decided to just go all-out and get a new Comet TC to go with the engine, since the exjsting one clearly has lots of miles on it, and the driven sheave recently shed ALL of its buttons and never fully articulated the way they're meant to.

Gokartsupply.com seems to have the most info. Any other supplier I should consider first?

I am sure there are lots of members that will take the old one off your hands

I'm betting that you probably cold seized the engine. Cold seizing is when the piston is hot (expanded) while the cylinder is cold (contracted). Not enough piston to wall clearance and then seizure. It's happened to me a few times with motorcycle engines.

I'll admit not being the most experienced small engine guy here, but at first glance I see no sign of Armageddon. I guess the head is next.

You know what? I didn't even think to TRY turning it - and it DOES TURN. The bearing is good, glass smooth rotation.

I promise you, this thing was seized up like a Chinese bicycle, it wouldn't turn AT ALL.

So... NOW what..?? :mad2:

I shoved my phone in there and got this image of a clean looking cylinder wall. What the he// is going on..?!?

Torque converter SHOULD be fine, but now it's got me wondering. The only part that could cause this would be the smaller drive clutch, right? The belt was loose and disengaged when the engine was off, and it definitely wouldn't pull or rotate. I just checked it, and it does still have some dry lubricant inside the drum.

This is starting to make me mad.
