Well, he didn’t have to swing an engine from the old oak tree out back. He had most of the parts except gaskets. I’d call that pretty painless.

You got it going without too much pain.
Pain is in the xxx of the beholder!
i saw 4 days of pain and frustration. I'm old. Experienced in frustratio And pain!
Well done FA!
Hey Fellas,

Thanks for all of the input & support :cheers2:
...but, this was the most STRESSFUL (2) weeks that I've had to deal with in a few years :ack2:

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience
...but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. MLK jr.

or, as I've always told my kids
Anyone can captain a boat in calm waters & on a nice day
...but, a real captain can "man the helm" in All situations...everyday
;)

TBH
I certainly didn't know if these procedures would be successful
...& my first thoughts were to just take it to a shop (Isuzu Dealer)
...but,
1.) they would have probably charged me at least $1,000.00 to diagnose that the engine had sustained FATAL damage
...from the "runaway situation"
or
2.) they would have probably charged me at least $3,000.00 to change the Turbo...& exhaust manifold
...& then, when it didn't start up, claimed the engine had sustained FATAL damage
or
3.) they would have probably charged me at least $5,000.00 to swap out the Turbo, the ex. manifold & the (4) injectors

So, after "thinkin' it thru" I figured that I've been workin' on these trucks long enough
...that I could access "if" the engine was JUNK...myself...for free
...&/or swap the Turbo
...& (at the time) I didn't even think about the injectors potentially being damaged

Keep Calm
...& think it thru :cornut:

Weekend Update

I put probably ~5 miles on the truck over the weekend
...test driving for drivability, to see "if" it still had the same "power" that it had & to see if the "miss" would go away
It still drives fine :bannana:
...except for the "miss", it seems to have mostly the same amount of "power"
...& no warning lights are "lit" on the dash (which would indicate...a problem) :sifone:

Also, no smoking (out of the exhaust)
...& no blow by (out of the oil system breather) :wai:

* Smoke from either of these (exhaust or breather) would potentially indicate a piston ring, cylinder scoring &/or valve issues
...& any of those things could have happened, when that Turbo impellor started disintegrating
...& "throwing" bits of metal into the air intake system
...that/then got "sucked thru the engine :ack2:

Monday Update
I put ~40 miles on it yesterday, towing cars

The "miss" hasn't gone away
* It's not that noticeable when just idling
...or at highway speeds
...it seems most noticeable when accelerating from a stop

I did notice some fuel "puddling" around a couple of the injectors
...& may have to get some new seals (rubber O-rings) ;)

Do it quick before the puddles become fires. 🔥 Maybe you got a small chunk of impeller lodged in a valve or valve seat. Just drive it and make money with it with the intention you will have to replace the engine or truck eventually.

Research
One of the ladies at the Isuzu truck dealership parts counter (Yup, she's a "chick" but, seems ta do a pretty good job) :cheers2:
...looked up the injector O-rings, for a 4HE1 Isuzu 4 cyl. Diesel engine

Well, "come to find out" these injectors have (2) "gaskets" as they call 'em o_O

They have the rubber O-ring (mid-way up the injector)
...&/also, a copper cone at (the bottom)

Hmmm...lemme see (brought some dissectin' tools)
SAM_4422 (1).JPG
This must be the copper "cone"
SAM_4423 (1).JPG
It came loose pretty easily (with just a bit of prying)
SAM_4424 (1).JPG
Here's the "nekked" injector tip (Jua'lla" don't look) :p
...& a top view of the "cone"
SAM_4426 (1).JPG
...& here's the other side, of the cone

Tuesday & Wednesday Update

I put ~80 miles on the truck yesterday
...& ~50 miles on 'er today :wai:

It still runs about the same (still has a slight miss)
...& still has a bit of Diesel fuel "puddling" around the first (2) injectors

So, I stopped by the Isuzu dealer
...& picked up (4) O-rings $1.77 ea. (x 4 = $7.08)
...& (4) Copper Cone gaskets $11.02 (x 4 = $44.08)
...& just to see, asked about the Injectors ~$315.00 ea. (x 4 = $1,260.00) no thanks...just checking :ack2:

Plus, I stopped by Harbor Freight
...& picked up an injector "socket" cleaning brush ~$20.00

Also stopped by Walmart
...& picked up a small jar of Vaseline (light petroleum oil/grease) $1.00

Have you looked into reman injectors?

for future reference:
I used to repair bearings for their wrist pin honing machines. I can tell ya this is an impressive operation. If ya need anything diesel, these guys can do it.

Usually something catastrophic has to happen for a diesel to runaway like that. Have to agree with your assessment of an oil seal failed somewhere and fed it extra fuel. The only way to stop a runaway diesel, is by cutting the air supply. Need something big to place over the turbo air inlet so it chokes out. Definitely not shop rags, some have used fire extinguishers to choke them out.

I'm really surprised it didn't send a connecting rod out the side of the block and into orbit. Glad it didn't destroy the block.

2 month update

I've put a little over 3,500 miles on 'er since the "incident"
...& she is still runnin' pretty goodly

Besides my usual local/in town/citywide "runs" last week
...I had to go on a ~50 mi. tow (~100 mi. round trip)
...&/also, a ~100 mi. tow (~200 mi. round trip) :auto:
SAM_5030 (1).JPG
So, it's time for an oil change & grease job
SAM_5031 (1).JPG
Oil Change Drain Plug tip:

Wear/use a "shopping bag" as a disposable glove
SAM_5032 (1).JPG
After "breaking" the drain plug "loose"
...use your "gloved" hand to remove the drain plug
SAM_5034.JPG
The bag helps protect your hand, from getting covered in dirty motor oil
...& simply "throw 'er away" when you're done ;)
SAM_5035.JPG
The top of the engine seems ta still be pretty dry :cheers2:
SAM_5037 (1).JPG
Don't see any specs, flacks or metallic dust...anywhere :wai:
