i heard welding without full body protection could lead to loss of fingers and cancer over 4 years every other day, or even on occasion. my teacher knows someine who had to get his thumb cut off.

37, and lovin' this stuff. I just bought my 10 year od son his first set of wrenches, and he tore his kart down for finals and paint!

BTW, I used to weld daily in a t-shirt and jeans. Neverending tan, yes. Stupid, yes. Ultra-high UV exposure most definitely can lead to skin cancer. Sometimes people need scare tactics.

Used to weld daily in running shoes, too, but got tires of weld boogers burning my ankles. Switched to construction boots.

u couldnt unless he got skin cancer there (which i dout)
or he burnt it realy bad somehow (with i could believe)

I could see burning a finger with gas, but not arc. I was using my crappy HF tig one day, and I was holding the piece I was welding to get it stuck on. I probably should have paid more attention to where my thumb was because when I pulled the torch away from the workpiece, I witnessed the arc massing through my thumb:ack2: I was amazed that it didnt do more than make it feel sunburnt.

lol lucky
some dopey kid at school passed the ozy torch across his hand while trying to braze

also what wound happen if u some how conducted all the electricity from an arc welder though your hand and it exited from your thumb.

i scare the crap out of kids at school by putting the mig welder up to their stomach and pressing the button so the wire pokes them

With fine MIG wire, you can actually pierce skin. My shop teacher's friend sat on his MIG gun and the wire actually went thru his leg. He showed us pictures of the wire coming from the gun, into his pants, and then back out the other side. Not the least bit bloody but it proved a point. Especially with a MIG with a big drive motor.

Random, but I shocked the sh!t outta myself yesterday unplugging the MIG. I wasn't thinking and touched the probe thingy's. Hurt like a mother. And who the crap is stupid enough to believe that the gun will shock you? Hay-Zuse. I do that too, but only when the wire is still glowing. We're required to wear coveralls, but mine do me no good. They're like as thick as a sheet of paper. I've got holes in many a pair of good jeans, and shirts. The worst part is when you're welding under something, and the slag/sparks fall into you long sleeve. My elbows have so many burn marks.
