either way just take a socket wrench and put a 3 foot pipe on it and the you have homemade breaker bar

Occasionally finesse works bedder than force. There a several ways to skin a cat, however.

Well since there is a notch for a keyway, how about buying a nut breaker?

Hey, some of you guys are pretty smart. I was beginning to wonder there for a minute... when you skip the dugga dugga as if it were some kind of tool for soyboys. 
Just teach neophytes the proper progression of force. Something like:
01. Add penetrating fluid
02. Use ratchet with correct socket
03. Breaker bar
04. Breaker bar with a longer lever or extension
05. Impact wrench with impact socket
06. Blue Wrench
(e.g. a propane or MAPP gas torch & differential heat treatment)
07. Add more penetrating fluid
08. Add more time (to save the nut if you can)
09. More heat
10. Finally, destroy the nut.
OR whichever way it goes after you've tried and failed with regular tools...
A. For me, if it doesn't come off with my Craftsman ratchet and my brute force
, I usually go straight to the impact wrench. I like penetrating fluid too. I forgot where my breaker bar was last time.
B. Destroying the nut with an angle grinder or oxy-acetylene torch requires more finesse and care as you can damage the axle or the threads if you're not careful.

The "progression of force" puts it out there for all to absorb. This should be in the DIYGK shop manual!
