I have a Honda 5 HP that came off a cement mixer. It has a 7/8" shaft. I want to put it on the Manco Dingo I picked up for my son. The Dingo has the torque converter on it. Will this work:

A Comet SCP 350 series belt drive centrifugal clutch at the engine then to the stock pulley on the jackshaft?

OR

does anyone know if Comet makes a 7/8" asymmetric driver?

OR

Is there an adaptor that steps 7/8" up to 1" to use with a stock comet 30 series asymmetric driver?

I know it would be easier to go to Harbour Freight to get a clone- but this is in my garage now and it runs well, like a Honda.

would that mean...

tearing the engine down to turn down the shaft? I found a 7/8 clutch on ebay-$79 plus shipping. (ouch)

Even if you did have to tear down the engine. Its pretty darn easy. Look at the thread "My dragster engine work" I stripped down my entire raceing engine in about 1 hour total. You could probably do it even faster but I was checking clearences and gap's as I whent.

I don't have a lathe....

I wonder if a machine shop would be willing to do that......

Another question:

I sat the engine on the go-kart last night and noticed the shaft is a considerable amount shorter than the others- would a coupler setup work? one that has a 7/8" keyed bore that extends the shaft about an inch or so then steps down to 3/4" keyed shaft....does anyone make anything like that or would a machine shop have to fab one up?

A machine shop is more than willing to make ANYTHING for you within there machines capability's which is more and you could probably ask for a 5 hp engine. It just comes down to $$.

I got one!

I called up Jim at Max Torque and he had the correct clutch for my engine. Come to find out it is actually a metric shaft (20mm). Price wasn't too bad ($60 plus shipping). Jim was a really nice guy and very helpful- I would highly recommend giving him a call if you need a clutch....

not THAT bad...

with the engine AND clutch I am at $100...I think I am still ahead of the curve for now....a HF engine would run about 150 ( i know they run them on sale for 100 every once in a while) and the clutch another 30-35.... My total budget for this kart is about $200...

Engine and clutch $100
Complete chassis in need of restoration $25
Diamond Plate floor board $20
New front tires/wheels $12
New tube for rear tire $4
Spray paint Free
Sandblasting Free

Total spent to date $161

That leaves me with $39 to make a seat (plywood foam and vinyl), replace cables (have plenty of bicycle brake and shifter cables laying around), rig up the throttle and fabricate a new exhaust- The engine is a GC160 and the current one fires directly into the back of your left shoulder when you are sitting in the kart- so I am going to have to come up with some type of 180 degree bend to turn the exhaust toward the rear of the kart.

I took a 8 hp engine to my local lawn mower shop because my shaft was a tad bent. They replaced it and my bill was about $79 I think. WOW! Yes, it isn't as expensive as one may think to just have the Crank replaced.

i have the exact same engine, pulled from a power washer. Ive already rigged the throttle using existing springs to home it completely closed, and fixed the exhaust issue with a piece of 1 1/2" tent pole. I pinched and sealed off the protruding end, and drilled 5 or so holes so the exhaust fired to the side.

the kart is an older murray outrage, and im hoping to spend no more money on this project. the only thing left is to get the existing 3/4" clutch onto the 7/8" shaft.

anyone whos come up with a solution, its greatly appreciated.

-Get existing shaft turned down and keyed
-Get an adapter made to convert it to 3/4".
-Use a 1" clutch and adapter
-get a custom 7/8" clutch
-adapt a 3/4" clutch to fit (bore and key)
-replace with a 3/4" shaft
-use a 7/8" bore pulley and make a belt tensioner clutch
-use a 7/8" bore sprocket and mount the clutch on a jackshaft.
