invest in an angle grinder, and wire wheel from HF it should come to around 20-30 bucks

Thanks, will buy one asap. I have a newspaper job , and just saw the $9.99 coupon for it. I think my dad, has a wire wheel.

He has the angle grinder, but I'm going to get one for my self, and a drill press. AND BITS.

angle grinder will be cheap. you got to get the wheel to fit the grinder, i beleive its 5/8 spindles and 4 1/2 inch, without that, your welds wone be right, its like trying to weld on a plastic bottle, its not going to go anywhere near right, clean metal = cleaner welds

You at least need to get the mill scale off where you'll start welding, otherwise it can be a problem especially with limited amperage on hand.

I just skimmed through so idk if its been said, but welding with 2 hands really makes a difference. My welds were terrible birds nests and then I just tried with 2 hand and I did a lot better instantly, this is because you get more control over the weld and you can keep up the bead longer becasue you don't seperate from the weldpool as much. Hope this helps!

Your moving way too fast, and not getting any penetration. You should be moving an inch every 5-7 seconds. BTW, your not Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, your using flux-core arc welding (FCAW). What heat setting are you running?

No, he's most definitely GMAWing.

Move slower.

You can MIG on top of scale. It's not ideal, but works okay for mass-practice.

Looks to be slag on his welds. He's made no mention of gas. If he is using solid core wire, maybe thats part of the problem.

I'm going to second this. It looks like he's using MIG wire without shielding. You need either flux core wire or shielding gas to protect the weld. Solid core wire will not work without shielding gas (argon or argon/co2 mix usually).

The picture is blurry took it on my old phone, as soon as I bought my welder.

Here's the picture of my welder:

Dont you hate those welding face shields that you get with the welder. I don't know how anyone can weld with only one hand!!

yeah. spent money on a new phone, so delay in auto-mask.
Phone was worth it 720p & 1Ghz. $170, like new. Upload pics straight to photobucket then forum. and watch netflix in class.

Getting my mom to support my next few projects, by using them in science fair, techfair, and etc., plus it looks good on a resume and for college(engineering)

ok silver is flux

just makeing sure

we all make bizare mistakes somtimes

but not this time

I understand, made a few mistake before aswell.
Oh, I found the box the wire was in that ame with welder and it says flux-core.

What is all that printing in the top right corner? Could it be a settings chart? Looks to me like your polarity is reversed, you can lay beads with solid wire and no gas, but they will have tons of porosity and look like crap. Flux core wire uses reverse polarity, you should be able to swap the wires in the cabinet where the wire spool goes. This is what you are looking for.

^^^^^ This welder has a DC output, which is sooo nice! im jealous! yes dc welding with mig requires knowing two terms, DCEP-aka(decep)Direct Current Electrode Positive, and the latter is DCEN-(Deecen) is elctrode Negative. Scout nailed this one with a great picture to show it! Clean the metal, and CLEAN THE GROUND! connections are absolutely paramount on dc welders. They are unlike ac mig welders which are lenient toward connections, but again, as a matter of preserving the welder's health, a bad ground can lose potential during a weld, the current for the welder will then find the Polr, path of least resistance, and the only thing left is your wire feeder control and motor. Which is what we thought happened to my HF welder, dunno yet.

i'll check the the polarity, over the weekend. Just poured down raining today, so tomorrow it may rain.

When I opened my welder, didn't see two wires like that.

That chart in the corner doesn't tell the speed/power for metal. It tells the max amps and volts.
