HELP!!! was working till I started fiddling.

I recently bought a used go kart for my kids. It ran and cranked fine. I could tell the clutch was worn and it wouldn't idle more than a minute without quitting. I changed to a new spark plug. .30 gap, changed the filter and put in mobil 1 5w30. Engine still ran. I then fiddled with the band brake which strangely seems to have a cable connecting to the engine also.*wasn't sure if this was an engine kill switch).. I also turned up the idle screw. Since that time, it doesn't want to crank. With much effort i got it to crank but only run at WOT. I just wan to get it back to where it was. What did I screw up? Engine in Tecumseh 5.0 hp 0HH50 and go cart is and old 2 seater eagle series 2. Please help me.

I'm not very sure, since I'm still learning about small engines, but did you try messing with the idle screw more after it stopped? Could you have turned it the wrong way on accident?

with the info you gave us i think that cable is your throttle cable. on the engine manualy give it gas and try to crank it up

I've fiddled with the idle screw in every direction. No help. Can't get the thing to stay crank long enough at idle to change the rpm. It will only stay cranked at WOT. The cable coming from the brake side isn't the throttle cable. I can trace the throttle cable back to the gas peddle. I had a go kart 30 years ago. So I do know a little....very little. I didn't know if the newer versions somehow had a cable connected to the braking peddle that would counteract the throttle when depressed. Just not sure why this thing stopped after fiddling with idle screw and loosening the brake scrub pad. Is there some trick like turning the idle screw all the way in clockwise, getting the engine started, then backing out counterclockwise to a nice idle?

Maybe you turned in the fuel mixture screw instead of the idle?

from what I've been told, the tecuseh carbs with primer dont have a fuel mixture screw. only an idle screw. this is just from trying to reading.

pictures of the setup, carb, and screw your messin with will probably help. If you turned the idle screw in all the way clockwise like you mentioned on the previous post that is probably the problem. I would back it all the way out and try again making small adjustments.

its true. if it has a primer there is no mixture screw. only an idle screw.

how does it run at WOT? normal or slugish?

try to re-tighten the brake scrub pad and see what happens.

Are you sure you didnt mistakingly adjust the govener? If you did that could lead to your engine only running at WOT. Speaking from experiance lol. Also, make sure your throttle cable isn't pinched anywhere

the one screw is your idle screw. turn that all the way in and try to start it. if you do manage to start it at this setting slowy lower the idle until you like where it idles.

Coming off the L pedal you can see the cable. it goes around and attaches to the lever in the second picture. The thottle cable enters fromt right side and runs down the middle of the kart.

also the screw that I turned is the star screw right above the primer bulb in pic 3.

Try turning the screw all the way in until it stops, then retract it about one and a quarter turns. Try and start it and retract the screw a quarter turn each time until it starts, idles, and runs correctly without bogging.

I don't know what you mean by something attached to the band brake. I have a yerf dog with the same tecumseh setup that I've kept running for like 10 years

if i was you, i would remove the cable that goes from the brake to the throttle.

this probably prevents kids from hitting the gas and brake at the same time for a long time overheating the clutch.

as long as you dont press both pedals at once.... youre fine without it.

Referring to your third picture, the part that moves is your throttle and the linkage coming off is attached to your governor. Try disconnecting that linkage and manually controlling the throttle but put the gokart on some stands or remove the drive chain or it will be in danger of taking off in whatever direction it's pointed...

Well, that certainly does look like the idle stop screw to me. If it is, it shouldn't be affecting starting that much. Adjust it so the throttle plate (round disc in carb) is just held open a wee bit. Fine tune it after engine is running.

As for that mystery cable, I'm still trying to figure it out. Looks like it goes from the brake to the governor, which makes no dang sense, considering it looks like the governor is NOT connected to the carb.
