If I'm looking at things right, I think Blue's on to something. Way back when (cuz it still looks to me like the governor is no onger connected to the carb) I think it was rigged so that pressing the brake hauled the governor arm all the way over, over-riding the throttle. Perhaps not the way I would have done it, but it probably did work.

you guys are right. When my wife pressed the brake pedal, it pulls the lever back to the left...which is opposite of where it goes when the gas is pressed.

Okay, fair enough- but is there any linkage that goes from that lever directly to the throttle butterfly on the carb? Or does the cable from the gas pedal go directly to the carb?

in the third pic you can see the lever is attached by a linkage.

his throttle setup is stock. i had the same on my kart until i switched engines.

but you don't need the cable coming from the brake to the lever it is a child safety feature.

undo it. should solve the problem.

Okay- I see it now. First couple times thru I didn't realize that governor arm reached all the way up there.

In the process of re-reading things, I noticed your engine oil- 5w30's too thin. Go to single grade SAE30 or 10w30.

Got the motor running. I turned the screw all the way in and backed out about 1.75 turns. It was still idling too high. I took it for a spin and managed to get it to idle for about 5 min. Then my wife gets on, starts and hits the brakes. The motor shuts off and I couldn't get it started again. ahhhh. I guess its another project.

No, it's just a clutch-saver. Pressing the brake pedal effectively overrides the throttle, so you can't stand on the brake and apply throttle simultaneously.

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED ITSELF!!!!. I actually probably didn't screw anything up The float was going bad. After I got her cleaned up a bit.... ready for the kids.... went to start her and gas was pouring out of the filter. The freakin thing was flooding the whole time. This is what made it hard to start and idle but run well at WOT. Then after sitting overnight, it would start. The carburetor is at the shop.

nice but you should keep the clutch-saver thing

RUNNING LIKE BUTTER!!! Oh what a difference the carburetor made. Setting the idle was simple and the clutch isn't bad like I thought. Just wondering though.....Is there some type of governor on these things? I can tell it's maxed out around 25mph; however, there is more throttle left. When i punch it, the rpms rise but the speed stays the same. The motor is a Tecumseh ohh50 172cc 5.0 hp.

its got a governor.

the engine speed is mechanically controlled to not go over 3600 RPM.... you can remove the governor and link the throttle directly to the carbeurator butterfly.

only risk is you beat on it a little too hard, keep it wide open a little too long, and some internal could fail.

in other words, over revving the engine could result in the connecting rod snapping and smashing a hole through the side of the engine.

I like the remote cut-off trick. I scored a lawn tractor a year or so ago for the kids to drive while I was building their kart. I was at a surplus store and found a keychain remote system for automotive fog lights for a few bucks. I have absolutely no freaking idea why you'd need to control your foglights by remote control, but I bought it and wired it to the tractor. That way if they were doing something wrong or about to crash, I could kill it from a distance. Especially useful in that trying to yell over the engine from several yards away is entirely ineffective...
