Ok, as some of you are amazing at finding deals I am going to ask for your help-
I am looking for a MK1 Golf (rabbit for US users).
Preferably 3 door and either petrol or diesel (under 1.6 petrol). Not a convertable or a GTI
I don't want to spend much over £1000 depending on condition.

I have been searching for a while and have not found anything within the price range etc.

I do not mind doing some mechanical work (and would prefer something that needs a little work) but would like to steer clear from rust buckets.

I live near Bodmin in Cornwall, and would probably be able to get someone to drive me 200 miles (road miles not as the crow flies.)

This one here would have been ideal had it been closer.

This would be a first car, does not want to be immaculate and not too many mods, however I can undo some mods (e.g. excessive lowering.)

If something is found and a deal is made, I would be willing to buy the member some kart parts, or make a donation to paypal for their help. Free 'thanks' are also available

Cheers
Rob

Thanks. Yeah they are both nice, but they are MK2's. I do not like them nearly as much. Not hugely different, but not the same either! MK1's were last made in early 1984.

If I get one I want to chrome it up! Absolutely love this one, cannot flaw the car (or the girl!)

The chrome bumpers are around £3-400 though!

Cheers mate, I dunno why, I just really like these cars! saw one drive past this festival that I was at last weekend, I just stared!

This
beaut was under 20 miles from my house! I was going to go there just to have a look but didn't in the end. Think he sold it- saw it advertised in 2 other places, it is no longer there. I was unlikely to get it for under £2500, and both my parents, gran and brother thought it is way to much to spend on a 1st car! Good price for what the car is though, the chrome stuff is worth £500 and the alloys probably another few £100.

Dang! Nice car once again!
£3,100 for this is a bit overpriced in my opinion. As you say, £2,500 would be better. I'm sure there must be some cars out there, who are good priced with still a bit of work left for you.

if you want something cheap, simple to work on, fun handling and cheap insurance. get a ford KA.

they are actualy real sweet to drive aye. I've owned two. Also the engine(ohv version) is realy simple so good to learn about car mechanics on and cheap to fix.

also the twincam zetec engines from 90's escorts/modeos etc bolt onto the gearbox and you just need to buy/make one engine mount and change one of the engine pullies. They're super fast with a standard zetec. 0-60mph in 6 seconds

Not a massive fan of ford KA's, in fact I am not a massive fan of any ford's except the American trucks.

That vauxhall looks like a fun car but not my taste either.

I can help you finding something in that price range, but only LHD... unless you don't have a problem with that. :)
£1000 is around 1250€, I've seen mk1 golfs in Lisbon selling for half that.
The GTI is a different story, they can go as high as 8000€, absurd IMO when you consider a AE86 can be found for around 4500-5000€ in reasonable condition. :mad2:

what about peugeot? 106gti 205gti 309gti

My 1st car was a white 1993 Peugeot 106 Rallye, for around 2000€ back in 2003.
Was a great car, but only lasted 4 days for taking it's name literally. :roflol:
But pugs have a serious problem, not exactly the car itself but mostly associated with it's drivers... they get so much abuse that I see many bent chassis. :( (and I'm not a good example either...)

Thanks. I don't really want a LHD and plus import would probably be expensive, however if you send me links or pictures to some that may be interesting :)

This is about 3 hours away. Nice set of alloys and some chrome trim and the odd paint touch up and she would be good to go!

It looks like a nice Golf. Do you not have to pay more for licencing and registration the older your car gets in the UK?

I love the dice hanging from the number plate

You do know that whatever you get is going to be covered in all that farm "MUD" as soon as you get it home :D :D

Insurance isn't too bad. £900 a year tops for me on my parents fleet policy. Tax? It does generally increase but it hopefully shouldnt be more than around £300.

Didn't notice the dice!
The red badge would be coming off instantly, and a nice chrome one would be going on. Sucks, all the chrome trim second hand is about £500!

Nah, it's not gunna be too muddy. When I get one of these, it will be t cutted, then lots of wax and polish. What ever car I get will be baby'd in the garage, then driven hard on the road!

Hey, r_chez_08,
a quick question for you; just what type of operation does your family have? Beef, dairy, pork, mixed grain, what? I'd really hate to see you get a cool ride just to park it next to a poultry shed.......:cheers2:
