I need help on this clutch. It is on a Carter trail buster. I bought it yesterday. The driver is different from all pictures I have seen. First is it has 2 brass rollers under the belt on the fixed face post are they the same as the bushings as in the moveable face? Second question is the spring is missing and there is only one brass bushing in the moveable face should there be 2 brass bushings in there? I know it needs a spring and I will order it and all bushings at the same time just need to know if I need 4 bushings or 2. Third question this 40 has a 3/4 inch adapter for the motor shaft are they just pressed in and can they be removed? The wife wants to up grade the motor from 6.5 clone to 9hp or more so it can have electric start in the future.
Tim

Thanks. Yes it is a 40 it has the welded nut on the driver and the 3 weights 3 springs. It is on a cater kart. I figure it's from early 2000 -2005 or some where in that area. It has a 3/4 inch adapter in the 1 inch post plate that either was installed by Carter factory or someone else. The driven is a comet as well. What view would you like.

those are the guide bushings for the compression spring.
they go on either side of that.

Original spring would be 203039A
And yes, 2 bushings is correct; one either side of the spring.

PS for all I know that's what the original 3/4" driver looks like..
it's not an adapter it's how Comet designed it to reduce partcount for different sizes ;)

Thanks Sid. I will order 4 bushings and a spring later this week. Do you know if the 3/4 adapter is welded or press fitted in or just rusted solid. I can't find any weld indications. The post is 1/4 keyed outside 3/16 inside for motor shaft

why four bushings?
you need two ( and you have two... no need to order one at all IMHO)

Never seen the hub taken apart..
I can't tell if it's a press fit or friction weld or keyed in...
Sorry :(

Because the 2 on the post are worn. They are held in place with a split ring in a groove and the belt rides on them when idling and 2 for the spring.

Or should the shaft be bare under the belt.

Thank you Sid for the help. I ordered the bushings and spring.. now to fix the hacks the old owner did to the rest of the kart.
Once again thanks
