Denny is giving you great advice. Series 20 is much better for a go kart than a series 30 because it will run a lot cooler. Most people use the 30 because of the bolt on mounting plate but it was designed for a mini-bike not for a go kart. Many people used it because it was simple and most people with take the easy route rather than the best way to do something (myself included-why build your own jackshaft when you can get one so cheap that bolts right on the engine.) Belts on a Series 20 will last longer because they have a lot less friction as they move up and down in the sheaves.

"Ok", the bracket holding the brake rod is also holding the fixed end of the brake band. Hard to tell how much material is still on the brake band but I would start there and get a new brake band. The brake drum looks to worn pretty thin so if you are doing one you might as well do them both at the same time. The OD of the brake drum is what you need to know when you go to order the brake band. Sounds like we have the same wife, she cannot understand why I prefer working on a project like this rather than cut the grass, or trim the hedges. That is why God made deer's, they just have to eat faster to keep the pressure off me.

Another thing you can do when you put it back together is to add several washers between the sprocket and the brake drum so the brake band will be centered around the drum better so you will have full contact of the band on the drum. Some brake bands have a centering tab on them to do this and you would have to add the washer to make this possible.

@JimD Im leaving for NC on the 28th (Possibly the evening of the 27th) i'll be driving through (near naperville) and returning on labor day. Would work for you? Even if it just to drop them off to you. How much would want to clean up that driver unit should i bring the driven unit too?

Two things- BMI in Ohio is a good source for kart parts. They bought up many of the kart manufacturers assets when they all closed down in 2005. One of the few he didn't buy was Carter Brothers in AL -- they had a convenient going out of business fire. You could drop them off and I will go over both the units and make them look like new. My mailbox is on a pillar by the front door, just stick them in there and they will be out of the weather. I work cheap, just do someone else a favor down the line.

If you are lucky and the drum measures 4.2" then I have the drum. All I would need then is the bolt hole pattern which I can get off the drum if you have it apart by then.

Jim, you’re a hell of a guy! I used to go up to the GM tech center all the time on Ogden Ave.

Denny -- anytime you get away from Mayberry and you are in the neighborhood stop in and gets some bar ends for your projects. They just go in the scrap and they are great give-a-ways. I bring them to the vintage gatherings and they never come home with me.
