Hello everyone. I picked up a vintage kart the other day for my daughter. Not sure the make and am hoping to get it identified and get a get a few tips on getting it going. I plan on restoring it completely but want to get it running to take to the Hot Rod Dirt Drags. This year they are having some kids races. Here is a picture of the kart.

Interesting kid kart there(you can tell because the pedals are so far back), I bet someone can identify it here.

I think the pedals were moved at some point. There is some holes on the front on both sides. I will need to fabricate a new brake rod and set up a throttle cable.

What's your plan for the old Tecumseh?
Personally I would let it gather dust in the corner and only use it in the apocalypse as a backup engine. (You may not know since you are new, but I hate Tecumsehs. No offense)
But seriously, what's your plan?

Yes I can identify that kart (or say I'm 99% sure)

that is likely one of the most collectible vintage race karts in history..
A 1961 R1 McCulloch

Whatever you do, do not cut or weld to the frame,
if you can do NOT repaint it..

instead do the best cleanup possible and resell it to a collector
you're locking at about a 600+ right there
if those are the original wheels maybe even more...
with seat padding and the engine mount untouched maybe 900 even
looks like it's still the original tank ...
now an old Mc10 engine would be needed and you can sell that for 1500 or more.

Personally: I'd keep it, restore it and drool over it until my wife hits me with a stick
and most certainly would NOT let a kid anywhere near it, certainly not on a race track.
crashing that kart bending the frame would be a desaster!

DO NOT destroy that piece of karting history by repainting it pink,
or cutting/welding to the frame,
even drilling a single hole in the chassis is blasphemic!
Putting a four stroke engine on it is blasphemic and should be avoided at all costs!

Yes.. if it indeed is an R1 McCulloch... (JandJ? care to correct or confirm?)
it's indeed that much of a collectors item.

Well the immediate plan is to get it running and take it along with my '29 Ford coupe to the Hot Rod Dirt Drags at the end of the month. They are having some races for the kids. I didn't realize it was a rare kart. I will take some more pictures of the kart and post them up. I don't believe the rear wheels are old. They look like more modern catalog items. The front wheels do look old though. All the live axle parts look like ones I have seen on line.

Here are a couple more pictures of this kart. It has motor mount that mounts on the axle and looked pieced togethet strange. How are they supposed to work? I am having a hard loading pictures right side up off my phone. Sorry they are weird
