How are you guys squaring the engine output shaft to the axle? Any tricks?

Very carefully. and very easy.
But mainly like mentioned Square the mounting plate to the Axle.
I use a big steel square. The typical one like 18" by 24".
So if you are making your own slots on a steel plate make sure they are square too.
Then Wallah, the output shaft will be square to the Axle and all your gears will work and you wont throw chains.

Ok, so I got my 40 series clutch, not sure it's a comet though. Looks like a Chinese knock off. Anyways it was larger than I thought so I need to rethink the jack shaft. I'll add a couple pics, of a mock up. Will this work by putting the sprockets on the left side of the kart?

If that...but it's just a mock up...he won't be using it.

EDIT: And that's closer to what I was thinking D, but with another plate much closer, that's a lot of span...and plate is cheaper than steel shaft.

No room for a middle one, hits the engine base, or I cut the frame and lengthen it. You can imagine how excited I am about that route. Do they make s more compact pillow block?

They make them out of stamped steel as well. I assume those are less "heavy duty" than the cast ones. I mean to try them sometime.

Here's the type of bearing support I was referring to:

But if I turn it around the fixed shieves are opposite, that can't be right, what am I missing here?

that is the way the 40 series is made, the way you have it is designed to use with the yellow spring flip it around and than u can use it as u bought it

I've come across the 40 series yellow spring before.
The yellow for the 30 series is just a stiffer version.
The yellow for the 40 series is reverse wound, correct? For this purpose?

yes the 30 yellow is designed to change the shift point by being stiffer the comet 40 is wound opposite of the red and that is why you can use the 40 facing the "right way".

By the way. check out the bearing hangars there in the above photos.

Also I recall someone using those Cheapie ones, that Ez was showing.
Oh yeah it was a drift trike jack shaft, he welded them to give extra support.

Edit Here is the thread: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=29207&highlight=drift+trike
Kinda cheezy I guess, and plus you have a 390 yanking on that jack shaft.
Im just helping with the Brainstorm!!!
