I found a deal on my local craigslist which im considering. Its a 1999 gsrx 600 carbed motor including transmission and sprocket. im still getting information but according to him it is a complete running motor.

i am not sure yet however, if it includes a fuel pump which would be in the gas tank. do i have to use that specific fuel pump or could i use a lawnmower or car fuel pump if i cant find a bike one cheap?

im looking to use this motor for a offroad buggy. $350 sounds like a decent deal.

anyone have experience with getting one of these to run on its own as far as sensors wiring, etc. it doesnt come with a gauge cluster either , im not sure if that is vital or not.

im just looking for a good running motor.

thanks for any help

ps i have a service manual

is it oil cooled?

!@$% im not sure of the exact cooling system but now i realize that it would need the radiator as well as the water pump (if thats not on the engine) . it does have a oil cooler though in the manual. it also has a cooling fn pictured in the manual.

then its NOT liquid cooled..

its not as good (in some peoples eyes....)

prolly be fine.. I was just curious LOL..

what does that mean? does liquid cooled refer to using only oil to cool the engine?

i always thought liquid cooled was the same as water cooled, no?

either way i dont think it comes with the radiator or fan so im not sure if i want to buy it now :(

GSXR600's are water cooled, possibly ALSO oil cooled.

It's pretty good for an off-road buggy provided the buggy doesn't weigh more than say 350kg. Any more than that and the lack of torque down low will become apparent.

Oil cooled and liquid cooled are two different things.

An engine which is liquid cooled has a radiator, water pump, and the head/jug/block is cooled by a mix of anti freeze and water.

An engine which is oil cooled has a special radiator for the engines oil, which helps to keep oil temps down, which in turn keeps the engine cooler.

A 99 GSXR 600 will be liquid cooled, & WILL have a water pump built into the motor. If it's carbed, it didn't need a fuel pump, on the bike, it was gravity fed. You can use the little square Mikuni pulse type fuel pumps, you might need more than one to feed that much fuel though, unless you use the bigger, round jet-ski type Mikuni pump. You MAY need to change needle and seats to a bit smaller one for use with a pump or pumps, I had to go from a 3.5 needle and seat to a 2.8 in the Mikuni flatslide on my Rm 250 motor using a jetski pump. As far as torque? The transmission in those motors gives you MEGA torque through gear reduction, and they have a 6 speed trans, ;) . Those bikes will go WELL in excess of 130 mph bone stock, and most will do over 100 mph in the 1/4 mile, gear it to go a max of about 70~80 mph@ redline and it will give you all the torque you can handle and then some, ;)

Whats all this talk about "oil cooled engines"? If it doesnt have a radiator, and has cooling fins on the cylinders, I've always considered this type an air cooled engine. (whether it happens to have an oil cooler helping out or not)

I dont keep up on newer technology much, Is there some new style of non-water cooled engines that dont have any cooling fins on the cylinders, and exclusively relies on just the oil cooler to control high temps?

Maybe....technically....but I doubt it would even be measurable. If you can't measure a difference, then it really isn't germane to the discussion. Oil cooler or no oil cooler will show up in oil and bearing life though, probably piston wear as well to some extent.

Oh oops didnt even see ander's post!

If someone were to design an oil cooler which could take burning hot oil, and cool it down to 50* or so, without greatly restricting flow, or taking up a lot of space, then maybe it would keep the engine noticeably cooler. but your probably right, if it helped a lot, more engines would use them.

By the way, i had to look up Germane...thats a big word :D

Oil coolers do help a lot, but with oil and/or bearing related problems, not cooling issues per se. The thing is, the oil doesn't come in contact with enough of the motor, (especially the cylinders and combustion chamber) to keep combustion chamber temps down. ;)

I'm just telling you that all people who put these engines in Piranha's, which weigh ~375 kg's, complain about 600cc 4 cylinders lack of grunt down low.
The 650 twins are much more suitable for off roading, but in a light buggy the gsxr will still be lightning quick.

That aren't supposed to make power down low, my CBR 600F2 starts pulling hard about 6000, all the way to the 13,500 redline. The newer GSXR 600s have a redline of 17,000. You just gotta gear them to use the power where the power is at, ;)

ok we have settled on the fact that this engine is water cooled and that i will need a radiator correct? a replacement radiator should be pretty cheap at the salvage yard right?

i am going to be gearing this thing for a top speed of about 70-80 so it should have a lot more usable torque then the stock gixxer gearing.

any other key parts/ components i should look for when buying this motor? lioke which sensors do i need and can i run the motor correctly without the gauge cluster. thanks for all the help so far.

You don't need a gauge cluster, but you might want to see if you can pick one up on Ebay anyway, they generally aren't that much money. One thing I would strongly recommend is to get a shop manual for that motor/bike, it will help immensely with wiring questions. I'd check Ebay for that, and the radiator too, I got the one for my kart from a Kawasaki Mohave off Ebay (it was the right size and shape), and it's was $39, shipped, with coolant reservoir and cooling fan included. AFAIK, there are not any sensors other than the cooling fan switch (in the radiator), but you can do that with a toggle switch just as well if you wanted. You said it's a 99 right? And carbed?
