I don't think kids get to do it today with what we had. I believe they now use baking soda and vinegar.

But somewhere back in grade school, it was a class project to build a pretty good sized volcano, using paper mache and plaster.

After it was all painted and dry, the science teacher put something in a can at the top. It was an orange powder IIRC, and it had to be lit with a magnesium strip.

It shot sparks and orange flame out the top. I can't remember if it flowed or not, but it was pretty darn cool.

Anyone remember these, and what was the powder?

We did it in 6th grade science. Most of the kids did the lame vinegar baking soda thing but me and a buddy used hydrogen peroxide and yeast. We got some of the 3% hydrogen peroxide and boiled it down to 20 or 30%. It went pretty good, probably shot 3-5 feet up while the other ones just kinda flowed out.
