Hey guys I am brand new here and thought you all might be able to help me out. I have this old go kart from when I was a kid and the 5hp briggs motor wasnt working any more so I decided to try and swap out this generator motor Generac 4000XL 7.8hp. the problem is the frame is small and not much room, and I will need a clutch to fit the shaft which is tapered. I will also need to mount a fuel tank on it. I dont know how to weld and dont have much in the way for funds because I lost my job and this is to keep me sane between looking for jobs  Here are some pics that I have so far. The clutch that I already have is for the briggs motor. Looks to be a 5/8 diameter. I will get some better pics asap.

Here is the old briggs motor with the original clutch (its a little rusty. We have one that is still in the package from 10 years ago.

i say get a regular max torque clutch and do a straightpipe on the briggs, and upgrade the intake. possibly even take out the gov. that will give you 7hp maybe, and the cheapest.

Would entail some major machine shop savvy. Costly
What was wrong with generator?

didnt generate electricity. something between the rotor and stator. It would have cost my dad as much to fix it to buy a new one so he went and bought a new one. The engine barely has any hours on it.

well, i cant see a clutch getting on that shaft. the keyway needs to be on the part that isnt supposed to be threaded.

okay, use the generator gas tank, CLEAN the carb, and then see if its seised up. if you have the model # which is on the blower housing go to briggs and stratton . com and it will list all the parts of that motor and add to cart.

Yeah... What is up with that threaded part on top lol.
The adapter that went on mine, I made it my self. And I don't think it will work on that kind.

I looked up the serial/model on the briggs and I couldnt find pull up one on their website. It is a MANCO GoKart that has a serial number on it that may bring up something I can try. Any idea on how to get that gas cap off? Or how would I use the generator gas tank? (its gravity fed while the briggs has fuel pump)

you will need:

a socket set
torque wrench
(maybe flywheel puller)

so if you dont have those then there is $150 alone.

i dont know what motor that is so i cant tell you where to get a crankshaft.

plus, replacing the crankshaft will require a total engine tear down.

oh right, the briggs updraft carbs.

you might be able to put the carb from the 7hp on the briggs if the bolts line up and doing that you will need to take the governor out because of the linkages.

try a pair of channel locks and pour gas on it.

Ouch! The clutch would have to go on further than where the threads are.

I dont think they will fit. I will get pics and show the comparison but the Honda (or honda replica) carb is on with four large screws and widely spaced. the briggs has a channel (i dunno what to call it) bolted onto the engine It is tightly arranged pattern.

The briggs is your best bet. Give it a simple cleaning and some TLC. If you can get that cap off, then you don't have to worry about hooking the pump to the generator tank. I would personally try some penetrating fluid and chanel-locks.

hmm, i would say make a custom manifold but you dont weld, right?

i never thought i would weld, but i found a welder for $100 at harbor freight tools .com and now i do.

and im only 14 years old.

buying a cheap welder can make you a lot of stuff and even fix around the house things, saving you the money back.

for now i think you should clean the carb and keep trying to get that gas cap off, you have a pic of that?

and also what is wrong with the pull cord?

Not really sure what is wrong with the cord. It wont pull. I took it off and the spring is worn out so it does have some trouble retracting, but thats not the main problem. the main problem is that it just wont pull.
