That massive hole could've been avoided & could still be fixed. I can give you a few tips if you like; I do this stuff for a living. What type of welder are you using, MIG or stick?

MIG. And the hood cutouts are dead normal in the sport. They are done for both engine clearance and weight reduction. I could put some sheetmetal in there- believe me it's not a problem- but I've got some heavy kit going in there.

That said, I am ALWAYS open to hearing suggestions.

Yeah- There's just so much up in the air right now. I've signed up to another forum (a different sanctioning body) because of the total lack of activity on the first one. I have a huge laundry list of questions. Although some guys have come in with a helpful comment, it just takes too long, and it's one comment at a time. I guess I'm too used to the activity here at DIYGK- You can reasonably expect several people to chime in on something in the course of a few hours.

Since I am absolutely green in this particular sport, I have a LOT of unanswered questions. At this point, all the sanctioning bodies are quite a distance from me, so it doesn't matter much who I go with.

...All this to challenge myself to build to someone's specs.... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

They do post that info, and welcome the calls. I'm *kinda* used to using a forum for this purpose, so it's what I've been doing. I have ended up making and "executive" decision on my rear framing question that I know will be legal.

Bear in mind that they are based maybe 3 or so hours away from me, so when I get this thing teched, I'm doing it ONCE. That's a spitload of driving to fail tech on a stupid thing.

Cool, just make sure your getting info from your tracks tech inspector. You'll find there's a lot of "gray areas" that different tech inspectors interpret differently. When you make that 3 hour drive, his opinion will be the only one that truly matters...

Yes- That forum has a tech section, answered by thier tech inspectors- no problem there. And you're absolutely right- I know darn good and well who's opinions count, and that's why I'm getting frustrated not getting enough answers nor fast enough. For once, It's going to be somebody else's fault my build takes forever!

what are you doing for the exaughst system? i took out the baffle and other assorted crap out of the stock setup and i noticed mabey a 15 percent power incress. plus it just sounds so evil! another thing happened today that i gota share. when i had the ex. system all of i decided to take a test run. i fired it up and thought ''**** this is loud'' so thinking it would sound better Under load i decided to rev up and dump the clutch ''vroooooom,put put put put put...backfire!!!!'' it didnt... the threshold.

The exhaust is a 2-into-1 header/collector. Sounds good. If you go back a couple pages, I posted a crappy cellphone vid I took when I fired up the engine. I will be using that exhaust. The video doesn't do it justice- it sounds right snotty!

To touch on your off-topic-

Twice I literally had a sound wave knock me flat on my @$$. I never would have thought it possible, but it happened TWICE way back when I was in the band. A couple of times in the studio we were running well above our normal levels, and on two seperate occasions, all the right frequencies came together at all the right amplitudes, and literally shook the room and sat a couple of us down on the spot. It was stunning.

Well- didn't get a whole lot done tonight, but progress is progress. Yesterday I stopped at Princess Auto and picked up two 5/8" flangemount bearings for the steering column. I salvaged a 5/8" U-joint from a car steering column, and tonight I set it up. I have the steering wheel in place, the upper column, U-joint, and lower column. Next is the pitman arm.

I used a Dremel with a sanding drum to clearance the U-joint caps and yokes to increase the operating angle by 7 or 8 more degrees.

Made some forward progress today- I reinforced the chassis with 1" SHS tube. I did the two main rails and rear and front crossmember. I placed supports under the engine mount plate, and then had an idea. I took off the plate, and mounted it under the tubing, thus lowering the engine by an inch. While I was at it, I made the tranny mount plate, and sunk that into the chassis, too.

I stole the fender unit off the carcass of an old Bolens tractor that I've got out back, and tried that on for size. It will let me drop the seat waaay down without a lot of body butchery...

AND, since I had everything out, I did a little experiment with the hood- The cutout DID look like it was lacking something, so I grabbed the offcut, and started messing with it... I'll post a pic of the uncut hood, too...

Oh, yeah- I also cut the race car seat to size...

Dang that looks like a clean build but why use the (heavy) stock chasis and not replace it with a square tube chassis? Is it not allowed in the class your racing?

Heavy... Yeah- I have to meet a minimum weight requirement of 500lbs kart (I'm sorry, mower) and rider. Considering I weigh about 135, I may be fastening bricks to this thing!!! LOL

Let's just say that I didn't feel bad about stitching about 15 feet of steel tube to it yesterday...
