Been working on the dash and steering column support structure this evening. Here's a couple "during" pics while I eat dinner...

It's probably worth mentioning that I STILL don't have a tube bender. The curved bits you see are like any curved bits you see me use... Recycled...

Sorry 'bout the 3rd pics- getting a little dark in the shop and my Crackberry's camera honks!

x2 on coming along nicely!

I'd be interested to see how reinforced chassis vs flexy chassis would go, I'm not entirely convinced high torsional rigidity would be the way to go but then I haven't the fainest clue what the tracks you race on are like. :)

Coming along nicely. When I start a project I only ever seem to find time over the weekend to do work.

That's normally the case for me too, but lately I have had several light and easy days at work. So instead of coming home entirely bagged and spending my evening holding down the couch, I'm able to get some garage time in. That and I haven't had a lot of evening appointments/errands, too.

Thanks both of you. As far as the torsional rigidity goes, all I have is pointers from guys in the know, and theory. The fellas on the lawn mower race forums have advised me that it is desirable in the corners to have the left rear wheel unload (lift). Supposedly, it is to assist with the tight turns on a live axle. All I can do is take their words for it, as my total lawn mower race experience consists of cutting my lawn as fast as possible so I can go play in the garage... :D

Sometimes... I could just scream...

Last week, I made a run to Princess Auto for bearings. The selection was awful, nothing in stock. I got two 5/8" flange bearings for my steering, but the 1 1/4" pillow blocks I need to hang my axle were only a memory. A clerk told me that all the bearings were back-ordered, with no set delivery date. He suggested that PA was changing bearing suppliers, and I might have a bit of a wait. Bugger.

Today, I drove into Alliston to the TSC. They had ONE 1 1/4" pillow block. F:censored:! I ordered a second one, but was told I might have to wait up to 2 weeks! Double F:censored:!

So... I still can't hang my axle. Which means I can't set the fender height. Nor can I start working on the brakes. Or pretty much anything else in the rearend! Dang.

I have been plugging away at things here and there, and have a video update that I will upload shortly.

Hit the phone book. You're outside of Toronto, right? A city that size has to have at least one bearing/ power transmission supply house. 1 1/4" is a dirt common size; the one you already have should be a standard, which means the bolt pattern and size as well as the center height should be identical even if it's a different OEM. And the price break should be a lot smaller than you expect. It sucks that you don't have it today, but if the others don't know when they'll have stock, it's time to look elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Is that a tack weld I saw on the pillow block under the dash?

It's coming along nicely... apart from the lack of parts availability

BUSTED!!! LOL! Yeah, you caught me. Positioning the support member was proving quite tricky because of the angle of the tube, so I cheated a wee bit. I drilled and bolted it after the fact, and have NO intention of burning it in. That particular bearing is well used and has some wear, so it will be replaced before completion.

In between making sandwiches for the forum, I have managed to get a little garage time in...
Mocking up the axle with only one pillow block took some doing! Anyway, I pillaged a stacking chair for some light 3/4" SHS and built a support structure for the fender unit and seat. I got the seat mounted to the fender, and the fender mounted to the chassis. Since the fender came from an entirely different tractor, I had to spend some time figuring out how to make it meet up nicely with the running board. I got one side done. I also located a small shift knob and tacked a bolt to the shifter so it would thread on. Pics tonite.

Okay- some pics. First show the reconfiguring of the fenders to mate with the running board. Next is the massaging of the running board to meet the reconfigured fender. Then, the end result. Lastly, a shot of the fender/seat support structure. I'll get a better pic of that next time I take the fender unit off...

Looks like this project is moving along nicely, great work! Any idea what kind of speed people get out of these things?
