Thanks, guys!

Yeah- One income... Wife...Kids...Dog... If I was unable to to pull off budget builds, I wouldn't be building!

So... Recycling scrap steel, trading and selling for parts, sniffing out freebies... That's me!

(Side protection bars are being constructed from old hockey net!) LOL

So... Amongst the lovely tools that Santa brought me... A tire mounting machine (manual). Very cool. I was getting tired of killing myself trying to do it with prybars!

I peeled the slicks off the Douglas aluminum 8" rear rims, and mounted up my new rear tires. Don't they look tasty??? Tires are 16x7.50-8 on 8x8 Douglas aluminums. Had to do a bit of stretching.

...And yes- I did bolt the machine to an old truck rim to serve as a portable base...

Not at all, Fab! Actually, I was very close to building one according to your design. I hadn't yet gathered the materials, and POOF! Mrs. Clause (OK, Mrs. Toystory) came back from Princess Auto with one for me!

i found a murray lawn mower or lawn tractor because it is so heavy duty like your in the woods we pulled it out but haven't gotten it yet. the real glory about the thing is it has a horizontal transmission witch means a possible horizontal shaft, chain drive ,cintrifical clutch set up. so no more slipping off road. second thing is it has a vertical shaft 18hp opposed twin. with the other lawn mowers i have im hoping to take the 18 oppy out of this lawn mower put it in my murray 11/36 frame and use my peerless 4 speed transmission on it. i will not have but what it takes for belts and sprockets. but what im trying to get to is when i was looking at the lawn mower rats or squirles have chewed the coil wires do you have a spare coil you'd sell me

Nope just seen it looks pretty good but I would need it to change motorcycle and car tires we do those manually as well. I just need to invest in one because sometimes its hard getting tires back on the rim.

I do have a spare, and no, it's not for sale- nothing personal. Everything I have read on the race mower forums I have been researching at, indicates that the aftermarket coils for the Oppys are failure prone. Having a good OEM spare is worth its weight in gold. Sorry...

I would like to see this tractor you're talking about.

Guys, has everyone forgotten about this?

Leave it to the womenfolk to spoil the fun :D

Ok, you're both forgiven

My tractor is similar to that, except it has a horizontal engine with a horizontal transmission where the engine is rotated 90* away from inline with the transmission. It doesn't look like it works too well because the belt is really chewed up.

Sorry- I've been slack, not keeping this up to date. It's a long term project, and progress is slow.

I recently acquired the front tires- Carlisle 13x6.50-6 on 6x6 Douglas aluminum kart rims. This past weekend, I started building my front end. The axle tube is 2x2" SHS, the knuckles are made of 5/16" steel plate. The spindles are old kart spindles that I'm reworking to suit the task.

As of right now, she is sitting on all fours, but much of the frontend is still in a mockup stage. I used old heim joints and scrap pipe to mock up the tie rod and drag link. Just yesterday, I picked up new joints. Tomorrow on lunch I'm running over to Fastenal to get some related NF hardware to go with them.

The caster at the axle is set to 14 1/2*, as the tractor sits raked at about 4 1/2*. This will leave me with an actual caster angle of about 10*. KPI is set to 10*.

I had to slice and bend the original kart steering arms to clear the deep dish of the rims. In the current position, I've a bit too much Ackermann. I'm probably going to cut the original arms off completely and make new ones. The "extra Ackermann" may not be much of a problem, though. It's not like I'm setting up for a particularly tight turning radius. The tracks are dirt, and the inside front won't have much weight on it.

There's still a TON of stuff I have to do to this. 90% of what you see is temporary, mocked up, or only tack-welded. And of course, the bodywork'll be dead last. I'll shoot detail pics of the frontend tomorrow.

Yeesh. I've really been lax in updating this. Then again, I haven't done much lately. Awaiting parts, inspiration, and free time. The job I have been on for the last month or so has been particularly gruelling, and I'm pretty much deceased by the end of the day.

But, spring is just around the corner, and so is my income tax return. I'll be able to pull the old girl outta mothballs, clear some crap out of the garage, and score some more key parts. Thinking about a new welding machine too- which oughta be just in time to start burning in all them dang welds!

I've also been slowly equipping myself for disaster! Two new helmets, a racing suit, shoulder-supported neck brace, gloves, and Prozac. Well- everything but the Prozac. I'm getting too old for pain, and lord knows I'm NOT going to crash into a giant marshmallow...

Well- I dug this beastie outta mothballs while I'm off work. In the last couple days I have acquired and rebuilt a pre-EPA carb with the adjustable main (Thanks again, Jammy!) as well as the fuel pump. I've been prepping and painting engine parts, and still have a long road ahead. Had to quit for the night, getting too dark.

I should probably mention this-

I recently attended a lawn tractor racing event at a local agricultural fair. I asked several participants (and the event organizer) many questions, and got some very helpful answers. Instead of all this BS about driving 3 hours to the closest club, etc, I have decided to participate in the local agricultural fair circuit. They are not sanctioned by a particular club, and are essentially exhibition races. There is a small purse for the winners, but points are not accrued. The tractors are teched on race day, and I don't have to adhere to iron-clad rules from any one club. It's a lot more along the lines of what will suit me, since I won't be doing this full time. Race when I want to, where I want to. That simple. YAY!
