I decided that the transmission was more trouble than it was worth, so I have decided to replace it with a jack shaft, I am working on that, i would like to make it 3 speed though by having 3 pulleys go to the jack shaft and tension one at a time,
any ideas?

I'm trying to think out how I could tension them, would brake cable be good enough or do I need solid rod?

oh and to answere your original qyestion iis you use a brake cable to untension it youd prob be fine but most people have springs to tension it and cable/rod to untension it

yeah but in most cases you would have it always tensioned, then un tension it on start up, however with the 3 speed, i think it would be better to have them loose then only tension when you want that gear, that way you wont have to pull the other two loose at the saw time and some how pull all 3 for start up.

if i were you i would have springs tensioning all of the belts all the time and cables/rods to untension them, when you wanted a certain belt to be untensioned you could build a device that locks off the cables to keep it unengaged, sort of like the mechanisim i thought of for my karts parking brake

Your leg would get tired real fast. My setup incorporates a neutral gear.

just use a hand lever mechanism that that locks int place to untension the the belt you want untensioned. if you wanted nutral just pull all 3 levers
