Have you got a return spring on that throttle arm?
EDIT- umm... FLOOR!!!

Yup, we installed the return spring right below the gas tank near the governor arm so you can't see it. And the floor will be added as soon as we can get it back to school, so we can get the metal and welder to use.

EDIT:

And we also need to install the cup-holder.

Excellent! I might suggest a muffler brace too. It's hard to judge by the pic, but I personally am nervous about any unsupported weight swinging off the exhaust port. Sounds like a recipe for a cracked head. Just a thought.
Also remember not to use a seatbelt or harness until such time as you have installed a bar/hoop/cage.
Either way, well done budget build! Cheers!

The muffler is extremely light, more lightweight than the original muffler actually.

Looks pretty good considering you're building out of free stuff & scraps! Nothing I built in high school looked that nice! My only comment/criticism is that your welds look a bit like playdoh (ie; they're a little on the cold side, either not enough voltage or too much wire) :p What voltage & wire speed are you using? Try 18V and about 180IPM. If you're already in that neighborhood with your settings then try traveling faster & draw little W's in the puddle, you may be happier with the results :D And wear some feckin' gloves! Overall nice build, keep up the good work!

I usually go in a small circular motion when I weld. The welds aren't perfect but they hold strong. If it can handle a 300+ pound man hopping on it, then I'm sure they're good! lol

Lol it is indeed tough to argue with that kind of strength test, your welds may not be perfect but at least you're doing it, and by doing you can only get better ;) The world would be a better place if everyone learned how to weld in high school. Keep the pics coming!

I hope not everyone does because, if needed, I can fall back onto a technical skill that not everyone can do!

Oh man you shoulda seen the welds I was doing before I started the project. Let's just say they sucked... Haha. Now my welds are nice and strong. Not very clean looking, but they hold! :roflol:

Also, POV video is coming soon. Along with a couple others.

Ok, question for the more knowledgeable people out there:

I can reach 43 MPH with the governor. So that's 43 MPH for 3600 RPM. Now, if I bypass the governor, how fast could I possibly go?

Here's my engine:

Briggs and Stratton 900 Series

Would you guys recommend governor removal? (I know about the risks, but is taking the governor off worth the extra power?)

You're not necessarily gaining any power by removing the governor, the motor was govern'd around its peak torque and horsepower in the powerband.

What you would be gaining is more top end speed, How much? You would have to calculate it out.

It ALL depends on gearing. If you're geared steeply (4:1, 3:1, etc.) your engine may not have the oomph to bring you much above the governed speed. Calculating ratios is just theoretical, keep that in mind. You could do a "butt dyno" test by attaching a length of string directly to the throttle or governor arm (depends on engine layout). Get her flat out and wide open on a stretch, and gently pull the string. If you experience an increase in speed, your governor was holding you back- no need to adjust gearing. If you feel no difference, and there's no increase in engine RPM, you will have to lower your gearing to benefit from defeating the governor.

Basically, if the engine doesn't have the guts to peak at 3600RPM with the governor, it certainly won't exceed it without the governor.

Regarding whether it's recommended to do: Some will tell you it's safe to do. Some will swear your flywheel will explode in a supernova of fragmented motor goo. I will say this-

As long as you don't let your RPM get crazy, everything will be fine. For starters- NEVER run it wide open without a load. The load dampens the harmonics, and will prevent the engine free-spinning up to insane RPM. Secondly, if you dial everything in right, your engine will run out of oomph long before stuff starts detonating. The butt dyno and a calculator will reveal your peak RPM, and you can rework your gearing from there if need be.

Well said, thanks!

As the kart is now - My top speed is around 45 MPH. Assuming that's around the 3600 RPM mark. I did the math and changed the RPM in the equation to 4500. I calculated the speed then to be 50 MPH.

I don't really think removing the governor will be worth a 5mph (Theoretical) increase.

Perhaps. How's your takeoff? You could remove the governor and gear down a bit. That would improve your takeoff, yet still theoretically cap out around the same speed or faster. Just food for thought.

It takes off pretty quick. It gets up around 30 MPH well within 10 seconds.

if you want to remove the governor, id get a billet rod.

second, i would gear it to go 40mph at 5,500 rpms, that way you can get even better acelleration.

I'm happy with the current top speed and acceleration. I have no intentions on changing it any time soon. More than likely, I'm going to keep the governor on there.
