As the title says , i found the Honda engine while i was in my countryside ....

The engine is presumably around 24 years old , and is part of an old water pump , used on a ship to pump out ballast water .
http://http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=63132&stc=1&d=1442755692

Now , the pump housing is gone , since it broke , and my grandfather got to keep the engine , and since then it was literally forgotten . Upon looking at it , its got heavy rust on the exhaust manifold , air filter and fuel valve . Some on the cylinder and fuel tank ( but the inside of the fuel tank is in mint condition )

Its a 5HP , 197cc engine , and it seems to be in OK condition despite its poor outer condition ... the Pullstart works and it still has oil in the reducer drive and the crankcase ...

Now the questions :
#1 : If the engine works , will it be enough for a go-kart and an average person ?

2# : is there any way of upgrading the engine / tuning it so that i can get a bit higher HP output , or is it too old to be tuned ?

3# : What mods do i need to do to it in order to be a go-kart ready engine ? ( something to do with the governor ) .

4# : What kind of a transmission would you guys recommend ? I heard that using a simple clutch and chain is the easiest way to do it , but takes a lot of maintenance and is a hastle to work on...

( I originally thought of taking a transmission from a Vespa )

Sorry if its a wall of text , just that im a noob with 4strokes ( have a 2 stroke RC car , and some other stuff ) in general , and this is a really old engine which id like to use and not destroy ...

#1 yes

#2 yes but this may not be worth it...

#3 as is is fine. its about 5HP according to the tag.

#4 it differs. I personally like jackshafts.

the only issue I have here. is it might be too far gone. marine stuff isn't exactly the most cared for.

I will be checking the engine out in a week or so ... when i get time to go back to the countryside to go and get it ..

And if you could explain what are those "jackshafts" ?

What i planned to do with the vespa transmission ( or any bike trans for that matter ) , is to have 2 servos + an arduino chip ... 1 for the clutch 1 for the gear change ... in concept a poor mans sequential trans...

First, make sure the engine runs...

#1 : If the engine works , will it be enough for a go-kart and an average person ?

Some water pump engines have a tapered PTO (drive) shaft; if that's the case, no, it's not suitable for a kart, it needs a straight shaft...

2# : is there any way of upgrading the engine / tuning it so that i can get a bit higher HP output , or is it too old to be tuned ?

There are many ways to add hp to an engine, regardless of its age, simple things like changing the intake & exhaust...

3# : What mods do i need to do to it in order to be a go-kart ready engine ? ( something to do with the governor )

As it sits, as long as it runs & has a straight shaft, NOTHING, it will work just fine...

The governor is there to protect the engine, you may remove it if you wish but, you need to remove the entire assembly, most importantly, the internal mechanism...

4# : What kind of a transmission would you guys recommend ? I heard that using a simple clutch and chain is the easiest way to do it , but takes a lot of maintenance and is a hastle to work on...

Who told you that? Any transmission needs maintenance, a centrifugal clutch setup is the least expensive & most trouble free...

Sorry if its a wall of text , just that im a noob with 4strokes...

Don't apologise, we prefer lots of info, it gives us a better understanding of the issue at hand as well as your capabilities; you did a good thing

Hi Josip..

If you really do not have straight shaft best option is to buy reductor from tomos umo engine, it will fit and you do not need jackshaft..

Or you can find original honda wet clutch, it should be no more than 150 kn ( 30$) on njuskalo..

If you need any help.. Shoot.

Not sure who told you that, but a clutch and chain require about 0 maintenance. All you have to do is oil the clutch and chain every now and then...

Also , stupid question : How to identify a "straight shaft" ? The engine has the reducer box on it ..

Exactly like this :

NOPE!!!! Not at all!!!! We don't believe there is such a thing as a stupid question.....and it doesn't bother us at all if you know nothing at all...it's what we are here for....and if you don't get helped here....then we're not doing what we came here for....

Exactly like this :

If your engine has a redux box on it, it won't look exactly like that because that engine doesn't have a redux box; can you please post a pic of your engine?

Also, if your engine has a redux box, there's a chance it also contains a wet clutch...

Thats the only pic for now , in a couple of days il be able to get the engine here..

But i am confused , in the engines manual it sais the thing on the side (output ) of the engine are reducer gears (box) .. and the engine has two oil check/refill caps one for the crankcase , and for the reducer...

Not all engines have redux boxes, in fact, very few have...

.. and the engine has two oil check/refill caps one for the crankcase , and for the reducer...

Almost all industrial engines have two oil fillers; with a redux box, it will have three...

Good pics but, none of what we want to see, whatever that is mounted to the output side of the engine, it could be a redux box, it could be a pump...

Thats the remainder of the pump housing , will be able to remove it later ...

Andi checked , its not a redux box , its just the governor housing i guess , because you can see in picture #3 , there is the second filler cap , and the governor arm sticking thru the housing above it ...
