on redsoxs request ill post my fold up shovel pics and do the best to explain the build process
this is quite differant to most designs as in is not designed to take on your bike or put in your back pack to go hiking
it is a shovel for off road users (or buggys
)
Tools (min)
welder
drill
pliers
hack saw
bastard file
Tools (max)
oxy
plastic dip
chop saw
grinder with cutting disc
english wheel
#1
draw blade on template and get correct size
cut blade out of 2mm steel plate
roll to appropreate diamiter
(or go to hardware store and buy blade)
#2
get angle iron 22mm x 22mm x 3mm
cut two peices 110mm long
drill an 8mm hole 45mm from one end and 1mm down
drill a 10mm hole 20mm from long end
cut a staight line down to each side of the hole as to make a slot
#3
get 100mm of 25mm of box tube
drill 8 mm hole in one end
find suitable 8mm bolt and bolt the two peices of angle to the box
lay it on a table so the far end of the box is in line with the slots
mark out where the corosponding slot must go in the box tube
drill 10mm hole on mark and anoughter 10mm hole 40mm away and cut out middle section
#4
get 500mm peice of 27mm x 2mm round tube
weld it to the box tube so the end with the slot is closest to the joint
#5
rebolt the angle iron to the box tube
put a 10mm bolt in the slot so it holds the angle rigid against the box tube
weld the angle iron to the blade in a way that ensures the 8mm bolt is about 20mm in from the edge
#6
get peice of round tube that fits nicely over the first bit of tube (i found some 29mm inside dia)
drill two 6mm holes 40mm apart at one end
find two 6mm nuts and weld them over the hole in a way that lets the corosponding bolt pass thru into the tube
weld a little peice of bar over the top of the bolts to make a handle
weld a cap over the far end of the tube
#7
get a spring with a key ring at each end and put it into the box tube so on end is on the 10mm bolt and the other on the 8mm bolt. the 10mm bolt will slide back and forth in the slot and will lock into the slot in the angle
slide the big tube over the little one and do the bolts up at a desired handle length

we have used the shovel many times down at the beach
and it works really well
we got our toyota landcruised bloggged to the chassie and dug it out in 30mins (alought the rising tide was a good insperation)
it sounds abit up my self but iv seen it on other forums and it looks like a good idea
im happy for anyone to make it at home
but u cant make int on a large scale
and remeber i was the first bastart to build one
