Hello,

I picked up a dingo for my 11 and 9 year olds to use. Seems to be in pretty good shape, other than it won't run!

It was running ok but sometimes wanted to die when giving the engine some throttle. It died when running and now won't start at all. I took the air cleaner off, dumped some gas in the carb and it fired but died soon after.

Given that I'm guessing it a carb related fuel issue. I tried pulling the carb off but got a bit stumped as i didn't want to tear everything apart on this new to us machine. I did think it sounded like the engine has some piston slap as well.

Given all that, thoughts on replacing with a predator 212? I see them at harbor freight for 99. Any reason to not buy from there vs other places that are more $?

Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!

Dump some gas in the cylinder, put the plug back in make sure its gap to .30 connect the coil wire to the plug and pull. I honestly say when u get the engine fired doing this method. Adjust the carb screws and make sure it runs fair. If u can get it to fire and run. Let it run for a while. I mean like 1 hour, check the tank and if u need to add fuel do so slowly. Let the engine burn all that stuff out. Never spray carb cleaner into the carb unless you get the engine running, once its hot and still firing u can spray some carb cleaner or starter fluid around the air intake of the carb to try and clean it out and burn it off threw the engine. It will want to die the more u spray. Try real hard to adjust the screws and idle on the carb. U should be fine.

10-17-97 thats a good engine with no points behind the flywheel. No way get that engine running i was going to do the same thing buy a brand new predator 212 motor and swap all my 30 series pulley and t.c. dont give up those 5hp engines run forever if u change the oil and the carb is good.

Thanks shinwrx. Ill give that a go tonight but i think if it fired off itll just die after running a few seconds.

Theres just one screw to adjust on the carb, right? I did try adjusting it yesterday but couldn't find anything that worked ok.

Also, the fuel tank has a sponge in it. Could that be breaking down and have gunked up the carb?

There is a adjustment screw right above the idle screw. Ill post a picture of mine since we have almost identical engines. U will have to use a very small flat head i used one for like eye glasses. Make sure u buy some break parts cleaner and spray that area really good too to get that crap out of there. Also yes the sponge in the tank can break down over time u would have to take the carb off and drain the tank to check but i say fire that thing up and try to run it as long as u can and u will have a better idea of what to do next with it. Keep us posted.

Here's that picture

Thanks! I'm out of town over the weekend but will try on Monday. Here's to having some good luck!
[edit]
I got a chance to try this morning. Gapped the plug, gas in cylinder. Started 2nd pull, ran about 3 seconds, and quickly died. I just dont think its getting fuel.

Im not sure how to disconnect the carb from the tank. I had all the carb mounting bolts pulled but the carb was solidly connected to the tank still. Is there some type of "nut" inside the tank connecting the carb to the tank?

The seller told me they had rebuilt the carb before selling but I'm not sure. Both screws you labeled dont have the spring on my carb.
Thanks!

It sounds like either when "whoever" rebuilt it. May have accidentally put one of the gaskets on backwards witch is easy to do and would cause no fuel. Or could be a gummed up from sitting. Keep putting fuel in the cylinder and firing it up adjust the idle screw and im sure if u can keep getting it to run it will stay running once you get things flowing. If u cannot get it to run longer than 3 to 10 seconds it would definitely be a fuel related issue. U could rebuild the carb and take a chance if u dont know what your doing.. or u could just buy a brand new one on amazon they are like 20 bucks comes with all the gaskets ect. There should be 2 bolts that go to the lower vavle springs and i think 3 bolts that hold the carb on the tank. Its definitely gonna take more time to take it off and remember where everything goes just make sure u take tons of pictures beforw u take anything apart for reference :) oh and i have no idea why there are no set screws on the bolts could u post a picture of your carb?

The pickup tube on those models can get pinholes in them preventing them to run. Fill the tank all the way up and try again. See what happens.

Thanks for the continued help. It won't stay running now. Gas tank is full. Here are some photos.

Sounds like the carbs gummed up. That sucks to take apart but you will learn alot after fixing it or replacing it ect. Good luck.

Pulsa-Jet's actually don't have lot of parts to disassemble, they're actually rather simple carburetors. The main trouble points I can see on the design as far as gumming up goes is the main jet, and the pickup tubes. Make sure the pickup tubes are clear.

Couple questions. Ive disassembled to this point but can figure out what's holding the carb to the tank?

Also, however to the bottom bold to remove the tank? Do i have to lift the engine up?

It looks like you have one more to unscrew on top of the carb.

As to the bottom.... not sure. I removed my entire engine before I got to this point.

Ugh, so dumb. Thanks everyone. You were exactly right, just that one last bolt. Got the carb out and pickup looked ok. I cleaned the pickup that's in the fuel bowl and reassembled. It idled and ran under load!

Unfortunately, after about 5 minutes it started doing the same thing. Randomly dying and then would die when throttle was pressed.

Any thoughts other than garbage in the tank?
Thanks!

Sounds like something in your diaphragm assembly. My recommendation would be to get a rebuild kit for a Pulsa-Jet and overhaul that diaphragm assembly.

Try taking the exhaust muffler off i think its x2 10 or 12mm bolts. I noticed my engine would run better without the stupid little crap wanna be muffler on it and would shoot flames out lol. Im gonna measure the thread size for the exhaust port and buy a pipe to thread so the exhaust is a straight pipe. Also yes i would think thats good advice take the entire carburetor apart and check all the gaskets and clean everything not just the tank. Its alot of work but if u can get it running you'll be happy.

Can you post pictures of your carb? Including the pickup tube.
Also, have you purchased a new diaphragm?
It’s easy to access- behind those four screws.
