I recently started building my first go kart (fully wooden) I have no prior experience with car parts or any go kart building experience for that matter. And have designed it based off of the classic wooden design with the foot steering. I have already built the frame and front foot steering using a pivot bolt. For the front wheels I used two pillow block bearings with two 5/8 bolts for my tires which had 5/8 bores which are then tightened with a nut. The front steering is fine other than the fact that I need more washers because the front tires are to close to the wood and scrape against it. My real question comes from the rear axle. I have been using Claude ai to help me out with the build but I have come to the part where I want to put the rear wheels and axle on to test out its rolling/ sturdiness. I was originally going to get two more 5/8 bore pneumatic 6-10 inch tires from harbor freight with two more 5/8 pillow block bearings and for the axle use a steel cold rolled pressed rod which would also be 5/8. I brought this up with Claude and they informed me that this wouldn’t work as once I connect the axle sprocket and chain the axle will roll inside the wheels causing the wheels to not roll with the axle or that the power transfer would not work because even though it fits on the tires aren’t locked on. My question is do I need to buy a keyed axle and keyed wheels. They also recommended me a sprocket hub which I can use set screws to screw it down. It’s a good amount of money to spend on something that I don’t know if it will be compatible. I know this post is all over the place but I am just looking for some guidance.
