Not really. It's a thin strip of metal that will lose its angle, given half a chance. Adding the aforementioned plywood corner gussets will do much more towards holding the frame square than those little metal straps could ever hope for. This isn't a picture frame we are building, it's a vehicle- subjected to many stresses in several directions.

Dont forget to reinforce with duck tape and JB weld. Maybe carry a roll of bailing twine so you can repair the frame splinters on the fly. With that being said, you should also carry some tweezers.

If you use the brackets with nuts and bolts, and use 2X4's for your frame, the brackets will keep your frame from coming apart at the corners. They will not keep the frame squaire, but will allow the frame to flex, and this inturn will will cause the brackets to fatige and fail at the bends. You should use the plywood gussets in the corners to limit movement, and flex. So yes they will work but not forever, constant inspection would be required. The wheels and tires you are useing will more than likely fail before your frame. You should use nuts and bolts with washers for every thing. NO WOOD SCREWS, they will not hold and hurt like hell when you get stabed with one.

I mean it will hold the right angle while its being built, after that they would be completely useless

I just offhandedly was looking around and thought hey whats out there in the wooded go kart world. I goggled "wooden go kart with motor", ( w/o quotes) and came up with a few ideas about the subject.

OP- As much as I like razzing you about your "machine", I inherently want you to have a good ride and live to tell the tale, Herbaceous or metallic alike.

Here is a good ideas site,

Im planning a trip to the hardware store wednesday.
two questions.
1. im pretty sure im going to ditch the "hand truck" wheel setup, and have the wheels mounted, each on its own axel, outside the frame. I plan on drilling a hole through the wood, getting a threaded bolt as the axle, and use two nuts for each wheel. Sound good?
2.I read in one of the links mckutzy posted, that there is a "V belt" pully which can attach between a vertical to a horizontal shaft. Is this practical? It would cut out all the work from converting the engine.
Thanks guys for your continued support (and criticism) in this 12 page thread.

All thread is soft and will bend, try a 5/8 solid round bar, drill 5/8 holes on each side of your frame and slip the rod clear though both sides, 1/2 water pipe, has a 5/8 inside dia. so you can use it for spacers. on your axle. Most wheels of the type you are looking at take a 5/8 axle. a hand full of 5/8 washers, put them aginst the wood and on each side of the wheels and drill the ends of your axle for cotter pins. All you need is a drill, drill bits and a hacksaw.

You are going to need a solid axle running all the way through the kart. If this was metal, you could weld the bolts on like you want to use, but because of the wood, you are going to have to go all the way through

Like I said before.

You can put one of those on each side, and run a solid axle,
or two on each side, and run stub axles.

Why not? There is that going against the grain thing again.
As understand it this is for the axle to rotate?
