There's a documentary called Before The Music Dies, in which a bunch of respected musicians, producers, writers, etc, examine what happened to the music industry.
My favorite part is where they have a songwriter come up with a song in about a minute, then they hire a model to record it, and the studio wizards turn her into a "star". She's not really a star, but you can't tell the difference.
