I would like to clarify one thing about my position on this. The cop didn't technically do anything he's not allowed to do in a pursuit. If you look at it strictly from the written law point of view there was no wrongdoing on the part of the police. I still feel the chase was unwarranted and never should've happened, but I also wonder about what took place leading up to this. It may have been on of those "contempt of cop" situations ( at least google this before you attack me for saying this, it is a very real phenomenon)

There could be any numbers of factors involved, but let's just stick with the storyline:

"The officers observed the minibike run a stop sign , SPEEDING, and driving erratically..." quit being forum specific detail morons for a moment.... and concentrating on "cop picking on a kid just for riding a minibike on the street " and then. ask yourself what should they do observing a car committing the same infractions? Wave at it and let it go? Just because it's a minibike do the same?

Observe a vehicle being operated in a clearly illegal manner and a manner clearly hazardous to the saftey of the general public and the operator himself, and just let him drive by and run someone over?

That's right folks....the "high speed chase" didn't START with the cops....the little punk was already SPEEDING through stop signs. Maybe these cops were simply trying to stop him from doing what killed him.

Poboy- Technically you are correct...... however, having passed DPD cars at twice the legal limit in my car and not being chased, it makes me wonder why this kid got chased. It's near impossible to get a traffic citation from DPD. About the only time anyone gets pulled over for Speeding within Detroit city limits is if they speed past a Michigan state trooper on the freeway.

Here's my opinion on the Most Logical Explanation:

Rookie cop.

DPD has been hiring, and it is very likely the driver of the police car was new to the force and not yet 'jaded' by the level of crime.

The family is fully within their rights to sue. In the end, the kid is still dead.

"In my opinion". You don't run from the cops. If your riding a mini bike over 49cc in most states are labled as off road only. You know that your breaking the law if your driving on the streets. If I was on the bike and was gonna be talked to about what I was doing, I would of stopped and taken a verbal warning.

On another note if the parents have a right to sue, the city has a right to sue the parents for allowing there kid to not only endanger his life but the life of others. He wasn't wearing a helmet, could of hit an elderly person or let alone some ones kid with his erratic driving. He put not only himself but the safety of others at risk.

This is why the police slowed down and didn't further suit. They just wanted him to stop driving like an idiot, and when they realized he would not stop and following would put him and others in danger they stopped pursuit.

We all would of stopped in this situation. If you take your chances and drive around, like we all do, you know what might happen.

I sure hope this is just a lessen and not a prosecution of the law. Its sad to see what has and is happening in the world where people now think they are above the law. If you don't want to live with rules, move somewhere where they have no laws. Maybe middle of no where is the place for you.

I support police when they don't use bias, follow there own laws, and try to uphold the law. I don't see a misuse of power, as sometimes people(notice how I didn't say police) do. At the end of the day you have to realize police are people with views, beliefs, opinion, and standards. Some might be the same as yours, some not, just like any other person you might run into down the street. There not robots programmed to act the same. Each will handle a situation slightly different as they are people with free will.

And yet Detroit has such a high crime. Whoda thunk? Rookie cop that wasn't corrupted yet? I don't care what little Billy does...it's not about how many cops are crooked or choose to set their own rules or what the status quo is in DPD.

It's whether the law was followed or broken. It's whether the actions of the police were egregious or reasonable, not even whether it's what most would or wouldn't.

Yeah...the family can file a lawsuit. (Personally I think the lady is going to have her hands full defending the charges against her)...but they don't stand a chance of winning.

sure.. sue everyone...
sue mcD for not telling you coffee is hot,
sue the shopowner for stumbling over your OWN CHILD in his shop,
sue the police cause your kid was stupid
if you're lucky you can make millions out of your own stupidity or in this case your kids corpse.
"Everyone's fault but my own".. got it ...

Have I said that I don't understand what some people think is decent behaviour?
That'd be a perfect example... :toetap05:

I think 49cc is just the minimum so you can ride on the street without plates. But we all know 49cc barely gets on its way.

There's a handful of videos on YouTube of people running from cops on mini bikes and go karts. One guy, Rob from Superspeeders, has a library of videos of him and his friends running from police in super cars, like his 2005 Ford GT, stuff like that can give kids ideas. Even age restricting the videos won't stop them because you can lie about your age on there anyway to create an account.

The family can sue. You can sue. I can sue. Everybody can sue.

We are guaranteed our day in court.

None of this says they will win, or even have a viable case, but we all have the option.

I had a long winded post, but deleted it. Suffice it to say, when you lose a child for no reason, you look for someone to blame.

I never had a problem with your posts or this one, but the parents lost there kid because they failed to teach him to obey the law, uses caution, and safety. Let's be honest, some of you may think kids will be kids, but there are still molded by your parenting. Unfortunately some kids in bad neighborhoods have bad parenting and the community is the bad influence. I believe everyone has a choice to make right or wrong decision and the parents and child made the wrong ones. End result being a bike crash.

Only there WAS a reason! When a straight A student that has done NOTHING wrong gets plowed down in a driveby or cut down by Cancer....THAT'S NO REASON.

Then....who you gonna sue?

You are absolutely right. Add in being raised in a neighborhood where the common response to seeing the police is to run, and it is a recipe for disaster.

However- I still stand by my opinion that around here, kids on mini bikes- regardless of speed or 'erratic operation', rarely warrants a chase. Heck, the cops will often use the radar gun to let the kids know who has the fastest bike.

A month ago, I would probably have been on the side of "dumb kid got what he deserved". Recent events have changed my point of view.

There were a lot of mistakes made, and a kid has left this world. I know their pain all too well.

It could have been handled better. Maybe if they ran with no light bar on or siren, maybe the kid would not have ran. I'm curious if this was just a neighborhood patrol or if someone called the police?

If someone called, it probably was for a noise complaint and maybe reckless riding. Next door neighbor has a 5 or 6 year old. He bought his son a Chinese mini dirt bike for him to ride on. He rides it occasionally and it doesn't bother me one bit. His older siblings ride a golf cart up and down the road too.

Long as people act decently and not a complete moron, then there is no reason for the cops to be called. If they were ripping through yards, then fine or talk to the parents.

Back when my parents grew up in the 1950s and 60s, if people were street racing, all the cop would do is give fatherly advice, and sent you on your way...oh how times have changed. We are raising a world of wussies (putting it HIGHLY tamed).

When I was a kid I lived in a small town. The cops would let us ride our mini's, go-karts and motorcycles with out hassle up and down the alleys. If they saw us doing something stupid they would kick our buts and then go tell our parents (everyone knew who all the kids belonged to). But in the town next to mine the cops would try to tow our stuff but the owner of the towing company would refuse or just give our bikes back once the cops were gone. All in all the cops in both towns just tried to let us be as we were hurting nothing and they knew where we were and not causing trouble. One day I was out in front of my house playing in the street like we all did back then, I was about 9 at the time and I saw some idiot kid a little older than me come blasting down the street on his mini-bike and hit my neighbors 4 year old grand daughter. Killed her instantly, the kid died in the hospital a few weeks later. The parents blamed the 4 yr old because when she saw the bike coming she did what we all did and stood next to the parked car. To everyone else it looked like he swerved to scare her and lost control and hit her and the car. His mommy and daddy tried to blame everybody but him. They were new to town and when that did not work they moved back out. No body was chasing this kid, both he and his parents made bad decisions. He was kind of a but hole and his parents were not any nicer. I doubt they taught him respect for others.

Now for what happened here from my past experience if he would have just had a little respect for the cops and the law and just stopped and taken his but chewing like a man, He'd still be riding his mini. I have to side with the cops on this one. They stopped the persuit in more than enough time for this kid to be alive today.

Interesting seeing everyone's perspective. I wasn't there so I don't care to judge either way. I know as a parent I try very hard to convince the children in my care that the police are on their side... Sometimes it's hard, because often I find local law enforcement have way to much free time. I have been pulled over twice on my enduro for having a dirty plate, once by six cops (three cars, two cops per car). I think they were hoping I would run, but I never have or will. No ticket from either time as I wasn't actually doing anything. I wish they would still print "to serve and protect" on the side of the cars, I think that perspective is lost.

Oh yeah, on an unrelated topic that people also apparently feel strongly about, I almost never wear a helmet on anything, restricted vision and hearing is far more likely to cause an accident than wearing one is to do much more than keep the chunks together. The exceptions are when attempting jumps or stunts, and highway driving, neither of which I enjoy much anyway. I've heard the stats, I just don't think they are accurate due to all the minor "survivable" accidents caused by poor vision, and the lack of riders in helmet law states due to decreased enjoyment. Seriously, I ride because I love the free feeling, I know the risks, most of which are other drivers, which I can far easier avoid if I can see. Anyway, plenty of opinions there too but that's mine.

That's the classic anti-helmet argument....which frankly ...doesn't hold water.

If you're on two wheels....it's not if you're going to have an accident...it's when.

Just because you can see the four wheeler coming doesn't mean you can always do squat about it. Modern medicine has come a long way....but they can't scrape up your brains and put Humpty back together.

Many of the motorcycle fatalities occur exactly like this one...only the cars pull out right in front of them. Now...if you can't see...you have a crappy helmet indeed. And/or crappy mirrors.

But where your argument COMPLETELY loses any iota of credibility is the little half shell helmets that in no way , shape of form restrict ANY vision OR hearing.

Sid,

I have to watch Chicago news on TV because the customers (mostly old men at the beginning of a shift) ask for it.

If you are a black kid growing up Chicago, the news teaches you that the Police WILL shoot you. They will turn off their camera, shoot you, make up a story, and get the rest of the police department to outright LIE to protect themselves.

Everyday, on the news, stories or updates about unarmed black kids getting shot by Police.
Stories about the reactions. The riots. The burning down of cities.

How are you supposed to teach THESE kids to respect the Police when ALL THEY SEE are their brothers, cousins, neighbors, and friends getting Murdered by the Police who are there to Protect and Serve the community.

Watch Network News near me for a week. Then tell me if black kids are supposed to trust Police.

The NEWS, which dictates how people behave, TELLS black kids to not trust the police.
Black Lives Matter
Blue Lives Matter

All that Matters is that the story sells and that everybody is scared enough to keep watching.

I've seen such things on the news as well ..
And truth is .. such cop should see a lifetime sentence in jail if I had to decide.

But this is going to be a political discussion in no time if I'd tell you how I feel about that and why.. sooo just let me say but this much:
You kinda made this escalative situation yourself ('you' as a nation, not person)
IMHO it could be fixed within a decade.. it won't be though.. not for all I can see from here.

What I am reluctant to believe is, that these kind of cops are the majority..
And again (highly dramatized),
that was NOT a burning trashcan neighborhood in the middle of the night, where basically every RAT is afraid of everything that moves is pulling a gun and shooting for no reason...
(which affects everyone's -incl cops- preposition to something happening)
It was a "I just mowed my lawn this saturday" neighborhood in brightest daylight..
and worst thing anyone was afraid of there was that a pidgeon will poop on your car under that tree...
which again affects everyone's preposition.

So yeah... NO! THIS KID WAS NOT AFRAID FOR HIS LIFE!
He simply wasn't and if, he was just paranoid.

It's not cops and people for god's sake,
cops ARE PEOPLE, perfectly average humanoids.
And within every group of people above a certain size
(cops, nurses, germans, americans, african-, caucasian-, asian- decent or in short HUMANS)
there is a certain amount of 455holes, no question about that.

But assuming every individual of such group must automatically be one is a prejudice.
sure there are groups where the ratio is well above average...
and no I do not give an example :lolgoku:
"cop" is none off such group.

One political statement and I'm done...
What you need in areas where "black kids must not trust white cops" (sad.. sad that this is even a thing!)
you need more black cops! as simple as that.
have more afro american people join in with the men in blue.
(easier said than done, I know.. but still: DO IT!)

See they do that with those areas. The problem is though that even they get criticized by their own people in that community...a cop is a cop is a cop to them. I'd pm you a video, however it's in English and its an hour long, so translating would take me all day. But in it, the guy reads a post from an Afro-American officer's facebook that gives his point of view. This was after the Dallas incident. Basically it said that he still gets ridiculed by his own people.

For every corrupt officer there is a least 10 good officers. Majority I've had to talk to are great, in fact never had a bad one. Usually just try to be as nice as possible and not be a thorn in their side.
