I think that is only a single-speed, RAGB. No neutral, just basically like the rearend in a car.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

You could do a lot with $700. Like buy a motorcycle, take what you need and sell the rest to help recoup funds. I bought a XV250 V-twin for $250 in running condition a couple years ago. Junkyards will probably not work out for you.

You could by a LOT of mower for that price, too. Or even a snowmobile driveline. Heck- there's a guy up by my place selling a Polaris Indy 700 triple for like $600. You could re-sell the tunnel and track. There's lots of options. Bang the heck out of Kijiji and Craigslist.

I don't think i'll need a transmission with a 16hp with a 12 to 35 config. I can go 76kph with 350lbs.

No you can't. You'll fry whatever clutching system you used. Geared too high.

Honestly- Don't you suppose I wouldn't be wasting your time telling you to get a transmission, if you didn't need one for your plans?

I don't really have the space to disassemble a motorcycle or atv. That's why I'm making one from scratch.

Trust me- you need more space to scratchbuild a vehicle than you do to tear one down. Been there, done that. Repeatedly.

geting a motorcycle would be best bet you would have brakes and stuff for the go kart .if you dont have the space to dissemble a motorcycle you wont have the space to build a go kart you can go a head and build it the way you want but its not gonna do what you want to do

You should look into an older sled. those things would be perfect. And your wrong about a tranny being a waste of time. But in the end its your project. You have to do it the way you want. Even if it isn't the best way. Just remember Easier doesn't = better!

I do have one further question (that may or may not be considered a time-waster, as it pertains to the transmission subject)-

How do you propose to plow without reverse?

Lawn tractor engines are vertical and the transmissions have too many aluminum parts. The transmission would not take the abuse. Also, the maintenance and assembly would be a BIG pain in the ***. And i'm only gonna drive on residential streets. Wait, what 'problems'. :(

The fact that the plow weighs 12 pounds is irrelivent. You need to push HUNDREDS of pounds of snow. The guys are right. Attach a blade to a riding mower. You can buy plow attachments for lots of mowers. Why wouldn't the teansmission take the abuse. Unless you screaming it big rpm's your gonna have a hard time breaking a lawn mower trans. Especially if your thinking of using 6.5hp engine. Maintenance and assembly??? You think it's easier to build a vehicle from scratch that to weld some plow mounts to an already built riding mower? IMO using a riding mower for this is a no brainer. Why reinvent the wheel. People have been pushing snow with mowers for decades.

Holy crap! I wrote this stuff before reading all the posts. Sounds like we're all on the same page. All except this genius.

Wow you raped my eyes. I wish I would have read the entire thread before I spent any time trying to help you. Let's break this down. Your wanting to plow snow for extra money at the beginning of the thread. Now your wanting to build one for the street. Pick one! If you would ride a go kart on the street even if it was legal your an idiot. What do you think is gonna happen when you get into a collission? Very well seen??? Reflective tape and led's? I drive a 65' long chromed out semi and these people still seem to not see me. Good luck with that. Youll be nothing but a memory and a blood stain on the highway. I noticed a pattern here. You seem to have all of the answers for your own questions and your too stupid to take solid advice. Why did you even post? Were you looking for reassurance and emotional support on this pipedream? "Superchargers", "turbo's", and all the other snake oils are just for you! I bet youll feel real emotional gains! I've never met you but I can tell already. You've got sucker stamped on your forehead. Now, back to my hole. You'll never receive any assistance of any kind from me. Hell I wish I wouldn't have wasted my time reading through your thread.

FatCat Hit the nail on the head. You would be much better off using a lawn tractor or garden tractor to plow snow. You definitely need a multiple speed transmission plus reverse. You will also need a lot of weight and tire chains if you want to push any amount of snow. I spent $200 on an old worn out Roper garden tractor. I've built my own plows for it, my own wheel weights and my own hitch weights. It has headlights and a tail light and is very comfortable to drive. With the plow and the weights that brings the total machine to around 600 pounds.
Heres a video I took a few years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ItgVOate3A&list=UU5n9YqftKShkBF6PKa6lDqg&index=35&feature=plcp

It doesn't look like much snow but when it gets crusty it gets extremely hard to break up. Even powdery snow gets tricky to plow if you don't have the right plow and it builds up under your tires. I had it in low range in the video. I could have used high range and pushed the snow further but I really need more than 14 horsepower.

My main objective is not plowing the snow. The cart is supposed to carry some friends to help shovel. The snow plow was just an idea. Let's just get back to the debate of a suitable sprocket ratio for such a heavy cart. Is 10 to 48 good with a 16HP.
