Hi, I'm planning to make a Go Kart with a 212cc PREDATOR which engine which runs at 4500RPM. The engine needs to be able to haul 500Lbs and needs to go at least 35Kph on the road (don't want to get arrested for slow driving). I was wondering if a 11 to 48 sprocket config. would work. I am also thinking of attaching a 12Lb snow plow. Will I need a bigger engine? Lower or higher sprocket ratio? Please help!

Let's get a bit more info for the rest of the members to assess. I know you PM'ed me some stats, but others can help too. Tire size, intended driving conditions, weights, passengers, etc.

That gearing combo works out to 4.36:1. Probably still too high.

The plow is 12lbs and is going to hover a few mm above the ground. But I still need to haul a total of at least 375lbs. Poor engine. :(

Frankly, you could do it with a Weedeater engine, geared low enough... But for what you have in mind, it's no practical.

Since you're talking about hauling, plowing, etc- why not source a used lawn tractor, and modify it to suit your needs (or steal the driveline)?

least 35Kph on the road (don't want to get arrested for slow driving).
If you're bombing around on Toronto streets with a homebrew anything, you've got MUCH bigger problems with the local constabulary than driving under the limit!

Lawn tractor engines are vertical and the transmissions have too many aluminum parts. The transmission would not take the abuse. Also, the maintenance and assembly would be a BIG pain in the ***. And i'm only gonna drive on residential streets. Wait, what 'problems'. :(

I saw on another post where you said you were going to use it instead of buying a car. I don't know any thing about canadian laws. So some questions .
1] Do you have to regester it like a car?
2] If so what are the inspection guidelines ( headlights, tail lights, brake lights , horn, etc.)?
3]Do you have to insure it?

4] Where and how far will you be driving it? Its not like you can drive a kart in a city without getting stopped no matter how fast it goes.
Plus you need to think about how visible you will be to cars and truck. Most motorcycle accidents are caused by car/truck driver not seeing them. example , my older brother was hit by a pickup while riding an ATV coming out of his hunting.
Just saying there is a lot to consider.

Yes, you can register it like a car - http://www.canadianrodder.com/features/fyi/registering.htm. No inspection guidelines for vehicles under 4.5T - http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDEQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mto.gov.on.ca%2Fenglish%2Ftrucks%2Fregulations%2Fannual.shtml&ei=zTygUNHhGqLzyAGSjIHQBA&usg=AFQjCNH89Oj08vQqoOzfsRLb24dPuiOpdA&sig2=EKjVz782o9rjdQY3_QtJmA. You have to insure ALL vehicles. Since it is a vehicle, officers will be a little skeptical but a quick license plate inspection will clear that up. And this cart will be VERY visible because I am going to put reflective tape and LED strips all around it. And I will use a 16HP DuroMax instead for highway speeds. Turbocharging maybe?

The CVT (TC) will not give you enough of a grearing range for what you have in mind. You NEED a multiple speed geared transmission.

The "supercharger" is one of the greatest jokes alive. Buy it, and I promise I will show up at your door and laugh at you in person. At my expense.

I think I might have said something about a mower...

Or, If you want to crank the heat up a notch or two, go and get a motorcycle or ATV to molest for the engine and tranny.

Or... re-arrange your priorities. either give up on the plowing/hauling and just build a "street" kart, or forget all about any kind of speed and build a utility crawler. He//, build one of each.
