the oil is black too. could it have gotten in the carb? that would make it hard to idle right? how do you do a compression test?

Uh, we've got a compression tester which screws into the spark plug inlet. I am not really sure of another process of testing compression.

That black oil could just be rich running.

No need for a breather filter, they all have ONE WAY valves. Everything from the 1950's Briggs 2HP's to the more current 5HP's and larger.

Head gasket won't do crap if it's getting oil from elsewhere... multiple places. Rings, bad valve stems (assuming you have any, lol).

alright i guess so. i relized that the oil that was in the engine was 2 stroke before i drained it an put fresh 10 w 30 in. thats why the oil is black.. could 2 stoke oil mess anything up?

2 stroke oil is generally blue o.o

But... just take in mind 4 stroke oil can turn black after a few years of hard useage.

well i took the pto off and then wiped all the oil out. got authentic briggs oil and it still runs hard. the compression is the same on a friends of mines 5.5 briggs so i ruled that out. we discoverd my carb was giving it too much gas by looking at the plug. we took the few bolts off the side of my carb to check the diaphram and the was a hole in it. i am going to buy a carb kit and rebuild the whole thing.
