yeah its got spark, Im not sure if its GOOD spark though. Ill have to check next time Im home.

FIRST OFF TRY A NEW SPARK PLUG
Next is your home made gasket- get a NEW ONE they are $1.49 at most
You may have a leaky intake gasket (with the engine running spray WD40 on over the gaskets and see if the engine runs any different) . Is your spark plug black? If so your too rich, too rich can make the engine die after excessive use. Your Spark is Good if it has a Blue Purple spark. Still try another plug first. If its none of the above, it would be your DIRTY carb or Ignition, most likey your DIRTY carb. I dont care what you said, it sounds dirty to me. You need to replace the diaphragm, and remove all screws and jets soak it and blow through all passages, even the small one that your HOMEMADE gasket is screwing with. Good Luck.

I checked the intake with wd40 a long time ago and nothing, It seemed to have a vacuum leak somewhere but I couldnt find it. The plug was full of carbon so yes it was running rich and I replaced it, It ran the same. The spark was blue but it was not a STRONG spark so I believe its something with the ignition. Ill probably finish this thing in summer because Im in college right now and Im finishing up my truck when I go home for spring break so I wont have time.

Sometimes(not very often) the spark is too hot for the engine. What number does the spark plug say on it?

Hmm, could you possibly have a blown head gasket? i could see the issue arising if the engine gets hot then drops compression. have you checked your magneto distance from the FW? have you pulled the gas tank and check the screens?

If the plug was too hot it would appear to be running lean from the plug chop, and could possibly cause pre-detonation.
sounds like, a fuel issue to me still. I mean seriously, it starts runs then dies, I had an engine like this remember? It would run and die, i mad e gasket for between the carb and tank- as did he. I replaced and cleaned the fuel bowlin the gas tank put it together and it ended up working fine.

Its definitely not pre-ignition I know that. Head gasket could be, that would cause the vacuum leak. I didnt check the distance between the mag and FW I should probably do that next time. Even when I spray ether down the carb it wont start. I also pulled the tank and checked the screens and cleaned them off.
second test will the engine blow if you constantly feed it starting fluid if yes it runs.

HA! Nah the engine wont even try to start with starting fluid, Havent done a compression test. I can tell its weak though
if you have spark, and fuel but no boom, you have a compression issue. First thoughts are, Did you run it without an air filter for a while? if so you will have scored the cylinder, which results in low compression. Also you probably have burnt valves, you need to lap and gap them anyways, and replace the head gasket, assuming your head isnt cracked. before doing any of this do a REAL compression test with a compression tester they are about $9 at the store, if its below 60 you have a problem, below 80 it will run but you need most likely a valve job

Solomon, please explain why you would have burnt valves from running it without an air filter?

Yeah I have a compression tester, pretty much have a full shop in my garage besides some big machines, When I get home Ill do a compression test and see. Your right with that I put fuel down the carb and there IS spark so it must be compression, it did seem a little bit weak.
