1WD is ok if this is just a yard/street kart, but if you want to ride it on grass i would recommend 2WD to give you more traction.
EDIT: clone or not clone 6.5hp would be perfect for a go kart like this. T/C would only be worth it for off road driving.
P.S honda clone is the same as honda just ALOT cheaper and slightly less quality, but still good for the job.

I would think for about $50, it could be converted with parts from BMI karts. As long as you or someone you know can weld it shouldnt be much of an issue.
Something you might be able to do, building a gearbox.
If your wanting offroad and atleast 30mph, I think I would look into getting a 10hp or more engine. Get a torque converter and maybe build a gearbox similar to the link.

we could have the same gearing, but lets say ive got the 5hp and you have 10hp... You will reach your top speed quicker than me. The 10hp has more power.

Honestly, I would go with the 6.5HP engine from HF. I believe it goes on sale for $99 next weekend. At least as my local store it does. But you have to buy it at the store. Then what you can do is just take out the governor and put 18LB valve springs in. If you don't know how to do that just youtube it. That can get you almost double your top speed. With the stock engine and a 1:8 gear ratio (10 tooth clutch with an 80 tooth sprocket) you can expect a top speed of 1.34*rear-wheel-diameter. (1:7 ratio=1.53*wheel-diameter, 1:6=1.78*wheel-diameter though I would be careful going that steep as you can burn your clutch out fast)
If you're going to take out the governor, some people think you need an aluminum flywheel. Depends on if you want the extra security for $100 as a steel flywheel going that fast can break apart and can be lethal. If you're only going to take the governor out and replace the valve springs I would say you should be fine with the stock flywheel. Though that's just my opinion.

IMO: sell the 18hp. Buy a comet tav2 torque converter, live axle and necessary components, and get a free flowing header and filter for your 5.5hp. Is it a honda (google).
if you want to mod it a bit more, I would sell your Honda and buy a gx200 clone. 34cc extra displacement to play with. You could install a flat top piston and a bp-2 (or a mod2) cam from NR racing, arc racing or affordable go karts. You can get approx 9-10hp after spending $100 on parts.
