I have an older 5 hp briggs flatty. It runs great at idle and if I throttle it at the carb however if I throttle it throught the governor it randomly dies like I hit the kill switch. Could it be something with the governor? I have pulled the kill switch wire to make sure it wasnt shorting and nothing changes. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I have tried to adjust the carb yes but nothing changes. Right now it is on a pocket rocket frame and sometimes I can throttle it up with the drive wheel up and it will run fine but as soon as I try to ride it, it will die. Its not like a sputter and die either, it just dies literally like I flipped the switch. Someone told me maybe a sticking valve but I pulled the head and everything was relatively clean. I'm lost. I will also add that it is a magnetron ignition no points.

Try to bring throttle up slowly to maximum to see if if it still craps out. Do this while under a load. Also, when it dies, if you back off on throttle does it continue to run? Or does it completely stall?
Sounds like a restriction in fuel supply.

If adjusting your carburetor screw does nothing, something's wrong. It should die (too lean), or start chugging/stall (too rich).

If nothing... ehh... check it out. I've had that screw point break on me before. Noticed that before I started it though.

When I said carb adjusting did nothing I meant it didnt change the stalling. If I try to back off the throttle it still stalls as well. I havent cleaned the tank out, maybe the screen on the carb feed is getting blocked?

Well my made in china chain broke so now I am waiting on new chain so I can put a load on the engine to test. This project is going to be my demise.

Well I will take some blame on this one it was rusted pretty bad so I soaked it for a week and loosened it up but I think the rust did its damage. Plus its #25. The one size that the tractor stores dont carry.
