Would taking the muffler off of my lawn mower engine do any good? What about a straight pipe? Also, if I added a larger air filter instead of the dinky stock ones, would that help any?

air filter would more than likely be better than a stock one, As for the muffler its not advisable to run an engine with out one cause its not very good for it, any upgrade you make should help your engine run smoother.

if its a lawnmower, i dont expect the neighbours would be happy if you straight pipe it, and it wont do your ears any good. and the hp gains wouldnt be worth it on a lawnmower. if may make it run smoother tho?

Lol, the engine is going on a go kart. Just spent 4 hours rebuilding it. 12.5 Hp B&S vertical shaft. Running it with no air filter at the moment. (Was clogged beyond my belief) and stock 1 inch muffler.

Would putting a mini K&N air filter on it help, or just make it look weird? Or a small carb filter?

Sit that engine on a shelf, in 10 years it will be the last surviving briggs 12.5, they have a horrible tendency to break rods(and destroy the engine in the process).
