Mebbe the old Tec motors are better than some people think.

Tecumsehs are fine engines. The carbs are just a bit finnicky. And they'll drop a valve if you rev them till the valves float, but you really shouldn't do that to any engine.

My old Ariens snowblower (20+ years old) has a 5hp Tecumseh engine on it, and it is totally reliable. 2 pull starts whether it's 70° or 20 below zero. Gets run hard and put away wet, and it's never given me a problem.

A 5hp Tecumseh won't be a "weaker engine" than a 5hp Briggs just because it's a Tecumseh.

True, but Briggs are classic.
I mean seriously, have you ever heard of a Tecumseh in a race kart series?
No?
I didn't think so.

Tecumseh Star engines come to mind. Maybe not as memorable as the Briggs Raptor or the newer Animal, or Local Option 206, but they did and do exist. Tecumsehs were a fine engine, yes the carbs can be a pain, but nothing a little patience and time can't handle.

I really couldn't care less. It starts on the first pull and it runs the kart my daughter loves. So to me, it's a great little engine.

I've got no problem with Tecumseh flatheads, never had a ohv one tho. My father buys snowblowers to repaor and re-sell, we have 3 ariens that we keep, all with tecumsehs that all run great.

Well, the only reason I will ever buy any parts related to or made for Tecumsehs, is simply because the intake and exhaust flanges are the same. COPYCATS! ;)

Hey JT... why dont you simmer down a bit and let the OP get back to us on what he has to say, instead of running off on how you like Briggs so much and derailing this thread the way it has...

Im kinda interested to what he has to say on this and about what everyone else has to be said about the 301....

Look up videos from Red Beard's Garage. He's done the complete Predator line up, minus the 79cc, 176cc mower engine and the vertical 708cc V-Twin. He built up a 301 not that long ago, but had some issues with the ratio rocker arms (billet aluminum aftermarket). He slapped it on a mini bike.

I trust RBG more so now for modifying engines than CarsandCameras...those guys just throw stuff together (It'll be fine) and send it. Greg over at RBG takes his time now and doesn't half bake anything really.

Which is kinda funny, considering that RBG is far more "redneck". :roflol:

Really? I would have to disagree with you on that one. RedBeard actually seams far more knowledgeable than the carsandcameras guys and I've yet to see him build a stove out of his exhaust system on his cart so I say way less redneck. Those guys at CandC just sling crap together and break stuff as much or more than they fix build or ride....pfffft.

C&C is mostly entertainment only. I mean the only meaningful thing they have built with an ounce of competency was the 670 drag kart. Saw their only episode with Velocity channel Dispatch and the Ducati kart (Dukarti), and that was a death trap. RBG and Rather B Welding are probably the only ones who do not half bake their builds.
