electric wheelchair motors can they be modified to go faster?

I have a few electric wheelchair motors that i'd like to use the top speed when they were on the chair was 6mph. Can they me modified to go a bit faster maybe 12-15 mph?

Yes i just looked on the worm gear that attaches to the motor and it says 18:1 . How would i change the gearing to get more top speed? I'm up for overvolting as well which is better?

Worm gears aren't good for speed, they're mostly for power. You'd be better off changing them to regular gears if possible.

So here is a picture of the motor. How would you suggest i switch to a different type of gear system? I'm a big newbie trying to work with these dc motors. I believe the stainless steel portion is the worm gear. Can anyone show me gears that would work for this type of motor? I'm looking to increase my top speed.......

Awww dude....crap, I don't think there'd be an easy way to modify that motor, you could, however, use a big sprocket/gear on the output and a smaller driven one so that it brings the total ratio down to something more useful. There will be plenty of power coming out of that output, I'm assuming.

Well, question, are you trying to keep them on the wheelchair but make them faster? Or are you trying to make a different sort of vehicle which you will use the motors on?

The latter. I'm trying to take those motors and use them on a project i'm looking to build. Actually, I was planning on using the joystick,speed control, and motors I parted from the chair. Ideally, i'd like to add a bit more top speed if possible. I'm up for any ideas to make this possible. If it is more work than its worth just let me know. I thought about boosting the voltage to the motors but i'm not sure if the brain will try to regulate this.

Boosting the voltage may make things go up in smoke and may cause certain four letter words emerge from ones' vocal orifice. The circuitry inside a lot of controllers is limited to a certain range.

I think, and guys, help me if I'm wrong, if you used a 40 tooth sprocket on the output of that gearbox and a 10 tooth sprocket on what ever it is that you're driving, you'll be able to bring down the ratio to about 4.5:1, which would give you more speed. I just tried to do the math and I don't know if I did it correctly.

about the bike wheel and gears,
you can keep part of your existing bicycle frame with the rear wheel and gearset. attach one of the front gears to your driveshaft.
use the gear shift and derailleurs and connect it to your steering wheel or frame

3 wheel, manual shift go kart

the wheelchair goes at 4 m p h can i have it modified to go 8 miles an hr

My neighbor used one of those motors to power a bike using 24 volts. It worked pretty well. If you know the output shaft rpm under no-load, and you know the diameter of the rear wheel, you can plug in a few numbers and hit your target speed. The motors get a bit warm, under load, because they have have no ventilation. My friend was thinking on using both motors, driving the same wheel in parallel, for more power and less heat on each motor. Sad to say, he hasn't advanced the project since. With one wheelchair motor and 24v, he was hitting just below 20 with a 26" mountain-bike frame.

They CAN be done. In Tyweed's question at the beginning, he wanted to increase the top speed. You'd have to know two things to get this all started:
1.) The wheelchair's original wheel diameter, and
2.) The wheelchair's original final drive ratio..... that is, the ratio between the output shaft of the motor vs. the wheel speed.

My friend's job of increasing top speed was easy on his bike project, because he went from a wheelchair with 11" diameter wheels to a bike with 26" diameter wheels.... he automatically had 2.4 times the top speed of the chair (6mph) just by switching to the bike wheels.(14mph). All he had to do was slightly tweak the final ratio to achieve his target of 20mph.

Using a typical lightweight gokart wheel diameter of 12"-ish, you can see that a person would have to overdrive the output shaft speed by about 3>1.

This brings up a couple of problems. For whatever reason (probably weight and rolling resistance) a bicycle does a LOT better than a typical kart on the same amount of power. (Healthy humans put out about 1/4 - 1/2 hp). If you load those motors down with the weight/resistance of a kart that you want to go 20mph, it'll heat up the motors pretty good.

I'd say the wheelchair motor does really well on a typical 10-speed. (My friend's bike was a kick to ride) but for a kart project, I'd go rechargeable lawnmower motor. They have sick amounts of power for a bike,(2-5hp) and they're about right for a kart.

There are really quick electric karts out there, but those motors cost a bunch!
