Can I take the flywheel and starter motor of this engine and put it on an old 8 horse Briggs?
This is the engine that I want the electric start

Should still work. The cranks interchange, I have done plenty of vertical cranks in horizontal blocks simply because there is a bigger supply of vertical cranks in the 'free market', otherwise known as the trash.

I have even put the horizontal engines side cover on a vertical engine block- you lose the mounting feet, but for the particular application it did not matter.

The only real difference between the two internally is the oiling system, vertical shaft engines have a gear like device that splashes the oil, horizontal have a finger mounted on the con rod to do the same thing.

mckutzy is currently building a DIY electric starter for one of his engines..

I think following his thread might show you an alternative way of adding an e-start to your engine as well.

The nice thing about it: since you don't need to change the flywheel, there is no need to remove your current one (or worse swap the crank)
Not that it's extremely difficult or something, but you'll likely need new gaskets or risk an oil leak.

just sayin'

For what I was thinking....
I think it would be possible to convert your briggs to use a starter cup found on honda/clones, by using a nut/washers that fits the shaft, to hold it down, like found on a clone....
Briggs typically have that one way lock up bearing to drive the crank to start....( the name of it escapes me at the moment... )

I say to use this recoil starter, as they are common and cheap... Potentially free at a lawnmower shop......
A little modification to your blower housing for it to hole onto, but not much I imagine.

My thread.... I hope to get the drills soon as to update on this thread...

I'm interested in this as well, as I'm currently making my MBX212 street legal and want to power lights and then might as well have electric start capability.

I've seen some YooToob videos of people transplanting the coils and flywheel (with magnets) from a donor engine like a B&S or an old Baja bike but I don't have any used hardware around to use so that's would involve some craigslist and ebay purchases.

Has anyone used the Electric Starter Kits that supposedly work on the Honda and clones (Predator) motors? They run about $75 to $110 each and include the key ignition components as well.

I was leaning towards mckutzy's method myself before finding this thread, even using a battery powered drill which I have to repurpose. I was going to use the rechargeable battery to power the lighting as well and just take the battery on and off after each use to recharge in the house.

So any experience with these kits? Do they charge the battery as well?

Thanks!
