Hi guys, I’m building a 16hp buggy using what I believe was a TrailMaster 150 gy6 Powered kart. Front rear suspension, discs all around, etc. so I have a duromax 16 mounted on her and the tav 30 knock off (please don’t flame me) and the final ratio is 10 tooth from jackshaft and 31t (factory 530 chain) on rear. Needless to say, today’s maiden voyage resulted in barely moving forward and roasting and snapping belt. How did the 150 gy6 move these with that same ratio? Internally geared?? Will the 40 series move it with the 10/31 setup?

Yea I don’t know if it’s trashed or what, should have the 40 on its way soon. Still struggling with gearing though. What is the low range on the t.c. , and is there a bigger sprocket that fits these 530 chained rigs

3.1:1 is why it burnt, youll need at least 6:1, but more depending on the OD tire size....

Why is this in 530 chain....... seams really heavy for a light kart... especially from the engine... #35- 40/41 type chain is more than enough....

Also off hand, I reckon the cvt isnt capable of handling the power of the motor as I think its for max 8Hp....As I recall... .

Yeah the ratio is really bad, you won't find a smaller 530 sprocket than 10 teeth but you could get a larger axle sprocket but probably still wouldn't be enough without a jackshaft. Or change out to a smaller chain size sprocket. A gy6 has internal gear reduction I'm thinking about 3:1 internally, and it has a built in CVT.

Your gear ratio is too high. You need at least 6:1, but with those large tyres I would actually even go lower.

The comet 30 knockoff is actually quite good, but will never work well on a 16HP engine. You will need the 40 series. Even with the 40 though you will need at least 6:1. This will probably mean a jackshaft for you

Don't use tiny rear sprockets with industrial engines and large tires.
Don't use 1" 30 Series TC's (basically at all, but surely not) on anything over ~301cc or anything with larger than 16" tires.

Who is doing this to these karts/buggys? We must find them and stop them.

Thanks guys , ordered 40 series genuine comet without backing plate and a 54 tooth (9 inch) #41 rear that should fit factory hub with slight mods and 10 tooth front #41 3/4” to fit jackshaft . Hope that helps , also it’s 22 inch tires.

Jack shaft gear reduction design help

Can anyone steer me to an existing thread or if not help draw out a decent jackshaft reduction design. I’m trying to achieve around 8:1 final after the t.c. Right now (In the mail) it will be 10 tooth and 54 tooth on axle. Are people running a chain from the driven pulley shaft to another jack shaft with a different tooth count and then from there to the axle sprocket?

yepp that's what people do!

it's actually straight forward to find your sprocket ratio..

54T / 10T is 5.4:1 with the ordered parts.
you want 8 ..
means 8/5.4 = ~1.48
you need a JS ratio of about 1.5:1 [since it makes nicer numbers and I don't need to calculate:D]

Sooo a fifteen tooth input sprocket on the jackshaft and another ten tooth on the output

will get you to 1.5*5.4 = 8.1:1 overall reduction.

I have a feeling you might still struggle a bit with high gearing, but i would test it out first. You are moving in the right direction!!

you should go t a 9t jackshaft sprocket with that setup, you are geared just a tiny bit too high. You may notice some belt slipping, especially when going up hills from a dead stop. with an 9t or 8t type c sprocket you will be in the right territory. Either way you'll have a lot of fun!

I have a 10t jackshaft and 54t axle with 18" tires and the kart that i have just goes wayyyy tooo fasssttt haha. I can only image what 22" tires would do.

Easy $40 Yamaha R6 brake upgrade

Was $60 to replace rear caliper or buy complete rear “nissin” off bike for cheaper, just requires a little fabbing, might be helpful for some

Originally, that buggy should have used #420 chain. What's this I hear about #35 chain????? I say.......no way! You should have the minimum, a 60t sprocket on that axle. Those buggies are not light even though it's had that ugly cage removed...The original transmission was geared semi low and there's a big difference between gears and belts. Inside, a clutch system transferred to gears through a sort of jack-shaft which transferred to the outer driver sprocket to a driven 60t sprocket if my memory holds strong. The only problem I see here is you are bypassing the gear system that drove the jack-shaft to the 'driver' sprocket driving the chain to the axle sprocket. You are skipping he 'middle man' here and making that clutch system sweat it all by it's lonesome....In this case since 60t was the original sprocket( it was on mine) you might look into a 72t axle sprocket.......... Looks great though!!
