How do I downsize my motors shaft from 1" to 3/4"??
Any ideas???

Any decent machinist can should be able to turn it down for you on a lathe and re-cut a keyway.

you'll have to remove it from your engine though.

The cheaper way out is to find a sprocket with a 1" bore and run a chain to a 3/4" jackshaft.

That just gave me a idea here but with this you would need a really reallly low idle. put a say 10 tooth 1 inch bore to a 12 tooth on a 3/4 jackshaft with a clutch on it that engages around 2000 rpm. with this hopefully you will be getting more RPM without increasing the engines RPMs! Would this work at all??

(just in case your question was serious... ;)

They turn em down because clutches for 3/4" shafts are more commonly avalible, plus they usualy cost much less than 1" models.

well, heres one way...
the bolt in the block acts like a rest for the file. This one came out perfect....

Ha! that's what I was going to mention next, I've done this.
The poorman's lathe lol!

The only drawback (if you don't mess up) is your file pretty well is rendered useless.
And you get to cut your own keyway!

If you need to cut a keyway the best way I found is clamping a strait piece of 1/4" stock centered on the shaft to use as a guide. Then layer up several of the thinist cutting wheels you can find on a dremel tool to get almost to the size keyway you need and cut through in multiple passed until you acheive the needed depth. Then use a square needle file on the keyway until your key fits snugly..... It's not perfect but will work in a pinch.

*remember the shaft is the size it is for a reason! The smaller you make it the more prone it is to warp and/or break!

Again. Please stop your rampage of thread bumping. You contributed absolutely nothing to an old thread but two emoticons. Not even words!

We need to make it so that all new members must read "Posting and You" and then take a mini quiz to gain access to posting abilities. They must repeat the test until they pass, then can post.
