I made my own air filter adapter from the stock air filter box on my HF Clone.

I took a hack saw and starting cutting. I was able to make a nice little adapter to hold the air filter on. The hole is not perfect round but with a clamp it holds a small filter on with no problems. Then all you need is a cheap filter with a 2" end.

Just look at your stock air filter box. You will see how easy it is to hack up. It also points your filter up and not right behind your rear tire collecting mud. This is why I made this to start with.

You will need to make a little bracket to hold your choke lever down for the stock box held it down originally. Notice the little tab coming off the starter cover? Just use a sheet metal screw and a peace of tin. (in this pic it was off to the side and not on top of the lever)

I made another tab coming off the head to hold my throttle linkage bar down. It keep comming off. Solid now.

Here some pics. Hoping this will help someone out. It's pretty simple and DIY for sure. And you already have the part.

Make sure you check your plug after this mod. In my case I went and bought a 59 drill bit. I just re drilled my stock jet. Plug came out nice and tan. Try a 58 and then 59.

The drill index kits at HF start and #60. You need to look for the cheap little bits in the plastic case. There some small one in there. Start with the smallest and test your plug each time. Make sure you run your kart wide open with a load. Kill the engine and roll to a stop. The check your plug. Idleing does not give a correct reading. If you plug is white drill it bigger untill you get a nice tan reading.

No need to buy jets.

Dremel tools also sale small drill bits.

I assume you make a disk that fits on the odd shape of what's left of the air box so you can fit a pod style filter? Or are you running yours with out an airfilter?

Thanks

The filter I have has a rubber lip. I just slip this over the odd shaped end. Then use a little hose clamp. rock solid.

Originaly I had a shop vac hose on this trying to make a snorkle. I could not get the engine to run right with the small shop vac hose. I gave up and just used a filter.

You could make a disk to run a larger Uni style filter. I have one of thos as well. You got me thinking now.

Okay, I didn't think the rubber would properly conform the the shape of the plastic. I guess it does then.

Thanks

Yes sir it just slips right on. It hold good enough where all you really need a zip tie to seal it.

Only con woud be the filters are really small. I will post pics soon.

one thing i would like to add is that if you do the suggested "mod" don't get a bunch of plastic shavings in the carb.

i LOLed at the snorkel. i wouldnt take a clone underwater ever!!

It is called keeping your filter dry along with riding in sand.

LOL all you want. The reason I wanted a snorkle was to get my filter from siting right behind my back tire. Not to cool going thru a MUD PUDDLE and soaking my filter. Plus I wanted to make a canister type filter for the setup.

That being said it looked really cool. Like I said it did not work right. But with this cut up air box I was able to point my filter up and away from my tire for free. Not everyone wanting a snorkle wants to drive under water. :idea2:

From this pic you can see how my filter would be right behind my tire.

The 2nd pic is my Dingo. It has a plastic cover over the back frame. Also the motor in the dingo sits to the left more than the Yerf Dog. Also look at the dingos gas tank. See that hole. I also tried to run a snorkle hose from the carb up under the tank. Then set a huge K&N style turbo filter from a car or truck into the hole of the tank. Why? Because I thought it would look cool and different.

Plus if I wanted to go mud bugging. I would take my Odyssey for a spin. Not sure how it would do under water. But I would rip up some creek beds for sure while my filter stays dry in that snorkle tube canister air filter set up. (if you seen this out riding would you LOLed and fall off your bar stool racer thinking I wanted to drive under water?)

4th pic is a sled engine air box mounted in a kart. Why? to keep the filter dry and help with sand.

When you get your first kart you will know what I was trying to do.

Any small 2" filter with a soft rubber end will work. It seems like the only one that will fit are the cheap small type on ebay. There are many ways to make a adapter to hold a larger filter. But I have not got to that yet. I am sure you can find somthing in the pvc section at Home Depot or a hardware store.

You need to remove box from engine to do this mod.

Your post does have merit. When cutting this air box with a hacksaw it will leave jagged edges. In the pics above you can see what I am talking about. I had to file the edges down befor running the engine. If not I can see how shavings could fall and enter the carb. It is commen since though.

Good eye at spotting that r97.
