yeah, the shocks are fully extended. the gear side of the CVs have a good amount of plunge to them, allowing for a good range. spinning the wheel you can tell there's no grinding or clicky weirdness going on inside the CVs. :)

i think future version of the Venom are going to have a wider wheelbase, allowing for longer axles, which will reduce the angle. trying to keep the buggies well under 6 feet wide is a pain in my a$$.

car salvage yard, in a big shed full of CV axles, no clue what they came from. they matched, and looked like a good size. :) got the pair for $60 out the door.

But now that sleds are under 400 lbs an extra 10-15 can make a big difference.

NO modern production sled is under 400lbs, the 2013 rmk is 417lbs, that's the lightest sleds have been in years and that's the dry weight. After your add fluids, rider and gear your easily over 700lbs. At that point 15lbs is not going to make or break the deal, if you want sub 400 dry your going to have to go back to leafers.

Note: As you can probably tell I'm a fan of tripples, although I'm not a blind fan. I just feel that they get a bad rap for being "anchors" and "pigs" when they aren't.

i hate welding the axles with the boots on after shortening them, but it's such a pain to remove the boots with all that grease inside them. so i weld till the rubber just starts melting, then run to the outdoor faucet (spicket?) and spray it down to cool it off. an interesting sight if anyone might be watching - to see some guy charge across his driveway wearing a welding helmet, gloves, and carrying a CV axle, to turn on his hose. :)

Next time (coz I know there will be), undo the clamps, slide the boots as far back as they'll go, then wrap a wet towel around them, it'll hold the heat away from the rubbers a bit longer

oh, and now i've got a nice cold going on. started with a sore throat last night, then woke up feeling like my throat had been through a meat grinder, followed by some coughing and some mucus, to now having full blown snotty nose and body aches. we'll see where this goes... wish my kids would leave their germs at school! or maybe it was my wife? this is my second cold in a few months. i'm about ready to live in a bubble...

Again? :ack2:

ha thats easy

might want to find out what they are u u can find replacement parts

there's no "replacement parts" on this buggy. lol. just about everything is modified to accomodate something else. a couple hours of elbow grease will fix/replace anything on it. no exact science, other than "make it work". :)

just about any CV will work. just hack off the ends, weld on the weld-a-hubs, then cut the axle to proper length (so that the CV is fully compressed when the trailing arm is level with the sprocket/rotor spool).

Might I make a suggestion? Anything you outsource from boneyards from vehicles, I would document what they came out of, in case of parts failure, you know exactly what to ask for at the boneyard, and if they don't have one, they might be able to find one for you. This is a must do, to me at least, if you plan to sell these to customers. The last thing you want is to have to re-engineer some aspect of the kart for something as simple as a torn axle boot.

+1 on this for sure.

I guess that's what I get from reading last years sled mags.

They were heavy compared to the twins of There day 50 lbs more on some that is alot on a 600 lbs sled.

Where are you getting 50lbs?
89 indy 500= 475lbs
89 indy 650= 489lbs

Guess where that extra weight comes from? The extra displacement. A 98 mxz 670 is 498lbs dry. I could have picked the wild cat 650, or the prs chassis 670 but that wouldn't be fair. Both were well north of 500lbs dry. The reason triples seem heavy is because they are large displacement engines. At that time you just didn't have large twins so you could only compare your 800 triple to a 700 twin, not a 800 twin.

Ok, I'm done.

XLT? I'm talking about a indy 650. XLT's were 600's.

The tcat weighed more than the zr's because it was a diffident chassis, unless your talking about the 1999+. After the first year of the 1L cat they nerfed it. More restricting air box, heavier and detuned pipes, smallercarbs. ZR also had powervalves. As for the weight, well that's a different matter. When they upped the 900cc to 1000cc Arctic cat also beefed up the crank considerably instead of just boring it out 100cc. I wont deny that its a heavy engine, but it has a lot of extra weight that could have been removed, it was unnecessarily heavy. Polaris was a better example of what a triple could be if you ignore the storms (excessively heavy crank). Switching from Fuji to Liberty was the biggest mistake they made. (note: I'm not a Polaris fan boy, I prefer skidoo)

i'd love to be working on it now (and i know greaser would love me to be working on it too. lol). will be back to work soon! i've got just about everything i need, minus front brakes, a couple of parts the guy i bought the sled from forgot to bring out (chain tensioner for the gearbox, clutch shield, 1 or 2 other things. he'll be bringing them soon), some new headlights, and some Duplicolor "grabber green" paint - the closest match to Arctic Cat green out there, to replace the red. :)

called the sled guy, he's gonna be a half-hour from me on monday. so the plan is to meet up when he's done with his appt to get the missing parts.

had a nice 40,000 BTU kerosene forced air heater all lined up for the garage, guy brought it out and it wouldn't fire up. said he'd let me know if he'd be able to get it fixed. checked craigslist the next day and he's got it on there for over twice what he was gonna sell it to me for. texted him, and he said it's no longer for sale for the original price because it cost him $ to get it fixed. seriously? lol.

meanwhile, been itching to get back to work on the buggy, things are ALMOST to the point where i can.

just picked up a nice lil 50,000 btu kerosene heater with a seperate thermostat for $57. guy even threw in a kerosene jug. i'll be sure to keep my garage open a crack for fresh air, and i'll place the heater by the garage door to suck in outside air as well.

will be back to work in the next day or so. it's like freakin' freezing out, my boogers ice over as soon as i take a breath out there.
