I'd suggest putting a cross bar in the a arms just before the pivots to make it stiffer, right now any flex in the arms is extra force put on the frame.

those A-arms aren't gonna flex, i used uber super duty tubing, and welded the bejesus out of em. plus with 4 strips of 3/16" steel holding them to the frame, supported not only by the welds to the frame, but also running verticly to the joint above or below them. they're solid. :)

put in a good 6 hours tonight. brrr, it's cold out! wondering what this hurricane is going to bring to michigan...

bored out the kingpin and tie rod holes on the spindles, made shock mount tabs, played "find the missing shock eye bushing" for a good hour (i have too many buckets of bolts!), and welded the bottom shock mounts on the A-arms. also cut the original shock support bars off front of the buggy. now to figure out how to mount the tops of the shocks, in a way that's functional and cool looking. :)

raised the buggy up a tad higher than it will eventually rest (i estimate 2-3 inches of "droop" once everything is mounted). looks nice up in the air like that!

ha u should see some of the drill presses they have in machine shops
im sure machinist has seen them
dirty great big gear driven ones
nothing is going to stall them out

u should cut out the bearing holes with a circle cutter on an oxy accetalene or LPG torch

u may want to get some cutting fluid
a mixture of coolant and oil (i think)
its great want a differance it makes

:roflol::thumbsup: Oh,yeah!! Yes, Fowler, I know exactly which Type of drill presses you're talking about..... for anyone interested, do a Google search for Carlton radial arm drill presses; I'd post a link, but I haven't learned how to do that yet.

:surrender: Ummmm..... for the record, they CAN be stalled out; it's most definitely not pretty.

Roughing out his holes with a gas ax may be an option; it depends on what the part has to do/ be/ look like at the end of the day. The OP will have to make that call...

Use of a cutting fluid can be a great aid; the problem with industrial grade stuff is A] price; B] mess (most people just building a go kart usually don't own/ have access to equipment that can use it to advantage; C] disposal: if it's aqueous based (soluble oil is just that; oil that you can mix with water), then you can't just dump it down the drain: legally getting rid of it means paying real money to have it hauled away (the paperwork alone is a real :censored:).

What can a small time operator do? WELLLL.... any lube when drilling/ tapping/ boring holes is a plus. Now, what do you have lying around? I'm guessing you might have motor oil; how about a spray can of chain lube? The foaming type works great for lubing your drive chains; for drilling/ tapping/ threading operations, it's a passable lube: what's really great about it, it really convenient, stays where you apply it, and it beats the :censored: out of no lube at all (and did I mention that it rocks for lubing chains? and pedals, and steering, and......).

If you are in the market for a metal cutting drill press, if you want to drill holes 1/2 inch in dia. (or larger) look for one that has a slowest speed of at least 250 RPM: 150 RPM is even better.

Hope this helps.....:cheers2:

@machinist
Have you ever changed the drive step pully on a drill press to achieve a lower speed? It should work in theory but just wondering if there's any real world application

It works in fact, as well; what needs to be done to make it happen depends on your personal machine. The problem is, modifying a drill press to run reliably makes most of the powertrain questions that are posted here look pretty small.

I've done it; I know how to do it; problem is, if you don't have the 25 years of learning/ survival that I have, it won't help., I can talk all I want. Without all the pcs. in front of me, I'm just talking to the wall.

Sorry.

glad you approve. :)

waiting to hear back from the guy with the sled. said he had a buddy that wanted a couple of parts off of it (hood, track, skis), and that he'd be willing to deliver it to me. that'll save me 4-5 hours of driving and gas $! :)

:thumbsup:Yep, with the right tools, it looks like MAGIC!!!!

Having said that, I'm wracking my head as to how to break this down for all the members who don't have a machine shop in their spare bedroom......

Both my mills are in pieces (hole-in-wallet syndrome means that's not going to change for a while) so I'm just going to keep thinking about this.....

 I apologize to all of you out there; my needs list is a lot longer than my wish list..... I'll pick away at this as I can.:Angel_anim:

no not some cmc thing

U know the little p shape things u make up in 15 mins with some 3mn rod

never mind a machine shop at home
we dont even have a reliable drill press at work
hence the reason everyone uses these

I think that before mysteryboy goes off and drops $500 on a torch he should really get a proper welder first.

i agree. although my little 90 amp harbor freight flux core does get the job done - life would be SO much easier with a real MIG welder.

the ski-doo formula 500 deluxe is being delivered tomorrow morning! now i can finally build the motor cage!

the guy pulled a few things from it, like the hood, seat, tank, track, trailing arms, skis, and some steering parts. but supposedly everything i need is coming! shoulda knocked off a few bucks for the incomplete sled - but it's a 97 ski-doo with a 499cc 82hp motor, reverse, electric start, and good compression. so i think it's still worth the $500. and he's delivering it right to my house. :)

i hope he's aware that i will hunt him down like the Terminator if anything is wrong with it... (that's supposed to be the terminator. lol)
