went to the steel yard today and got diamond plate for the floor, sheet metal for the walls, and thicker sheet metal for the roof and grill. then went to the auto salvage yard and pulled 2 leather seats and bought CV axles and a rear view mirror. then went to harbor freight and got more welding wire. 10 lb spools of wire rock! still on my first spool - it's lasting forever! and so much cheaper than buying the little 2 lb spools that run out every few hours. blah.

it's rainy and crappy tonight, so work will commence when i get up and at 'em tomorrow! :)

second trailing arm complete, reinforcements welded into both. removed tabs for the trailing arms due to the fact that the CV axles are quite wide, and i'd like a little more stability for this tall buggy, so the wheels are going to be spread out a little more. goal is to keep it under 6 feet wide.

bought yet another drill press today. this one is big and powerful! 3/4 hp 12 amp, and goes down to 240 rpms. yay! only paid $40 for it! tried it out finishing the bearing mount plates, worked like a dream. :)

tomorrow the trailing arms get mounted, and suspension gets added. will also be starting the front suspension and steering. bought some nice beefy polaris sportsman 600 quad shocks for the rear - they are firm! had gotten a second set for the front, but me thinks we'll use some softer shocks for a more responsive front suspension. :)

I got a 1hp floor mounted one for $10 at a charity sale, no one wanted it. Just shop around, go to a few machine shops, they will probably have one or two old ones that they are willing to part with.

craigslist. the guy had just posted it, so i was the first (and last, lol) person to respond.

now if i can just find a deal on a welder like that... only problem is that i'm limited to 110/120, don't have 220 all the way out in the garage. :(

Looks like you scored some good parts at the yard the other day. Those arms look plenty stout now its really starting to take shape now.

sure is! plan to have trailing arms and rear shocks mounted tonight. :)

meanwhile, scored a really nice 92 yamaha venture 540 snowmobile for $500 today! 127 psi on both cylinders, fan cooled, reverse, electric start, and just under 3100 miles. :)

i feel bad about tearing it apart - but it's gotta happen! :nopity:

Now I get it: I've been following this build & noticed the trailing arms but, I must've missed something in the text coz I was a bit confused by them. Now I see what you're doing, like a 4 link system from a car, nice

trailing arms mounted! i moved the pivot tabs out a bit to make a little more room for the CV axles. the solid axle is just there for alignment purposes. once i weld the bearing plates to the trailing arms everything will be nice and perfectly aligned! no crab walking, toe-in/out, camber, etc.

now it's time for shock mounts!

yeah yeah yeah... lol.

the trailing arms have been a pleasure building (not!). very tedious work, more time consuming than building the rest of the frame! they're almost done, then i can move on to the front finally. i think i might look into just ordering trailing arms in the future...

Out of cursorily, how much do each of those trailing arms weigh with the bearings? There is a ton of steel tube & lots o' welds in those, they shouldn't be breaking anytime soon . Do you have any sort of bushings at the pivots, or are they riding directly on the bolt?
