I recently got a mower/lawn tractor out of a dumpster at my friend's job (a mower repair place). Ariens with a 19.5 horse Briggs. Mower had a bad trans, no battery tray and no gas tank. I got a gas tank of a buddy's parts mower and have the battery strapped down to the fender where the original shifter was.

Also got a 5 speed trans off of a different friend for 15$. Trans fit in fine but I had to modify a front mount to fit as well as make the shift linkage. Used tie rod ends for the link itself and used the deck adjuster as my shifter (left side of mower, basically opposite the original) and now have all gears. I just need a belt and weld a lever off the clutch rod to have brakes and it'll be set to ride. Pics in a bit.

P.S. It has a stack and tractor flap

Went 31 with gov. bypass. And yes I know that it's bad and I can nuke the engine. Also broke the belt as in the average speed.

Took the mower up to a friend's cabin in PA. Broke the trans mount, carb's float sunk, battery died, had a cylinder full of gas. It was a fun trip. Took it to a yard sale on basically all gravel roads, 40 min round trip. On a fun note, hazard fraught air horn works great!

Stock front pulley, tiny rear. I really need to go bigger on both, keep the ratio and add area for the belt to grab.

Got a set of mower wheels with hubs (4 lug). Current rear tires will go on those and then onto the dingo (18s) and the 21 in knobbies onto the mower.

That's one tough mower. Great job on rebuild. My uncle got one sitting on his barn for about 4 years now. I'll come over this weekend to help him install the brake pads and kmc xd series rims on his Silverado project. I'll check the mower if we can turn it into a fun toy.

Looks tough but needs some work 😂. Just fried a belt and the trans is all torn part so I can weld the diff. Also planning out a bumper for it. (Maybe lights and a winch)

Got some lights for the mower. 3"? pods from Hazard Fraught, I have the 2 up front and one in the rear. Have yet to wire the rear, as I had a harness for the fronts.
The test of the back:

Those additions mean the hood stack is getting put away in favor of something quieter. I've yet to make it as the engine's apart because I lapped the valves and removed the gov. (most likely going to blow the engine sooner rather than later) I also shaved the head a bit, unlikely to do much but figured I'd try it on this.

Also welded the differential and filled the trans with gear oil. The trans mounts are 1/4in plates welded together since I didn't have access to the ironworker in my welding program's shop. (yay covid) got a new belt and got rid of one of the idler pullies since it was causing the belt to rub on one of the linkages on the clutch. Trans leaks around the seal for the brake shaft but I'm ignoring that for now. Stood up to me screwing around in the foot of snow, haven't had the chance to test it more.

this sounds like a fun project so gonna follow along.
I have an older craftsman diehard II 18hp twin briggs, 5 speed with reverse..... 42inch mower deck.
Starter died 4 years ago and went and bought a new mower in the sears canada closeout sales.
I have been meaning to tear that mower down and make a ripper out of it. On the lawn tracter forums they suggested I go 5" on the front and 5 inch pulley in the rear as a good starting point. Maybe I'll drag her up from the back shed and into the shop and get that poor girl on her way to a new life as something fun and useful ;)

Thanks! Sounds like a good starting point. I'm planning on going for 6" and 4" because I'll be doing a good bit of road riding too.

Took it and a box of parts and went to my buddy's house and spent an hour putting it back together followed by a ride in the woods. Figured out that the belt slips pretty good with the tiny pulley and it takes 30 min of run time to suck junk out of the idle circuit.

OOOOOFF Ouch! Well you did mention you'd bypassed the governor so yeah. :cornut:
What went through? Was it the rod itself or something else?
