Well, im not building a go kart currently but i will be next summer vacation (August vacation for me). I was wondering, will a differential from northtools need 2 brakes (one on each axle) or just 1? And, has any1 ever build a go kart out of PVC? i know there are difficulties in strength but i was just wondering.

yes u would need two brakes and there is nothing stoping u building a kart from pvc as long as it is small and u are forming all the peices yourself and not useing pipe

if you build a PVC kart, your *** is gonna be dragging on the ground. PVC has way to much flex for anything structural.

if u custom design a chassi then it should work

if u get a peice of pipe or a pvc box then it wont

u need to know physics well or just understand exactly how the weight will change as it move and the stress pionts so on and so forth

if u have no experience DONT DO IT

Don't build a kart from PVC. Apart from the obvious strength issue, it also shatters into very sharp fragments when it breaks. Not only that, UV light makes it degrade so it becomes more and more brittle.

Also, you don't need a diff on a gokart. It's a waste of money imo, adds extra weight, needs 2 sets of brakes and is just another point of failure in the driveline.

ill still try something w/ the PVC. i know about curves that help strengthen stuff and all of that so ill still try. if it succeeds, i have a light kart which will be pretty cool and maybe scary. anyway. ill make sure to put safty first when the time comes.

dude if u want to make a kart that u can basically screw together go with black gas pipe 1-1.5" light nut alot stronger then pvc

Someone else asked about that a while ago. I dont see that working. The joints would be very wear because of the tapered threads

You can get away with one brake on a diff if it's attached to the diff case itself. That's how the brake works on my kids' kart. The componentry is from an old chaindrive lawn tractor.

Why are you so fascinated with the PVC? It has been addressed here before. Simply not a good idea. Period.

like stated above pvc isnt a good idea, even though its lite youl only be able to put a small engine on it pecause 6hose would probably destroy pvc or melt it from heat, but if your really hooked on this idea use the largest dia and wall thickness available and make it a spported frame kart, also keep the speed bellow 20 on nice soft grass. like said above its not a great idea, you prob wont even save much on materiels cost

He could always get a nice under suit of chain mail and an over coat of Kevlar to up the safety factor. Id suggest extra thick in the *** area.

We need a thumbs up "I agree" button added to this forum. Just a little thing down by the quote button.
