Ya, I don't understand reverse ackerman either. But I understand no ackerman on buggies with soft suspension, because of the weight load on the outside tire and relatively little on the inner tire. No ackerman will make turning worse at slow speed. I would use ackerman.

Alright I understand you guys like ackerman so i'll design it in.But how bad is that front steering design i showed you guys.I would like a few opinions on what would be a more preferable alternative as the rod ends are coming tomorrow.

My decision on ackerman was cause by years of racing RC cars.In which I found ackerman made no difference in the dirt and only a little on the street(likely the 80/20 rearward weight balance). But I guess that just doesn't transfer over to full scale vehicles.

I have found that weight ratio front and back, is more important then ackerman for a good turning buggy, at the slower speeds.

Some race cars use reverse Ackermann geometry to compensate for the large difference in slip angle between the inner and outer front tyres while cornering at high speed. The use of such geometry helps reduce tyre temperatures during high-speed cornering but compromises performance in low speed maneuvers.[2]

I haven't updated lately but the steering is done and works with minimal bumpsteer(a couple degrees only at full droop). And yes it does have Ackerman. The steering works good but is has too high of a ratio for my taste(full lock is about an 1/8 of a turn on the steering wheel).I found a proper length rack and pinion for $90 that I will most likely get some time later.

The roll cage is done and the seat is installed.Along with all the tires and wheels.I'm down to just making pedals, installing the radiators, and changing the shocks. The shocks i have currently just cant support the thing well enough(110lb springrate is not enough) so i plan on buying some coil overs made for offroad and just using a single dirtbike shock in the rear. The cr125 i have came with a 4" diameter by 18.5" long rear coil over shock.

Here's a few old pictures of the buggy. The front end has a bumper so it's not as boxy looking and the rollcage is complete in the same design as the drawing.

That looks great .... the frame, is that 1x2 ?? I was wondering if you were going to put in a jack shaft into that rear because that distance from the engine to the axle looks pritty far away from each other.... long chain

You need to put a diagonal (or two) in the main roll bar hoop. As it is I would expect it to just fall over sideways in a decent roll over.

Also, I have reverse Ackermann in mine and it is a pain at slow speeds. If I didn't have so much power then it would just stall from turning. However, at high speeds in dirt and soft sand it is absolutely awesome.

Yea it is a long distance from the engine to the sprocket but luckily I got 2 5.5ft long 520 chains with the dirtbike. There isn't any room for a jackshaft without modifications unfortunately. After adding some diagonal supports to the swingarm I'll have to figure out a chain tensioner. Also a suspension stop might be needed to limit the travel because the dirtbike spring will increase the travel to around 11"-13"

Yea it's 1"x2" rectangle tubing .090" wall.I figured it would be smart to have the main hoop stronger. There will be lots of bracing added but for now i have to save up quite a bit for a cdi box and a coil.

It's been a while. This project didn't end I've been working on it slowly but surely for a while.

It is nearly unrecognizable now and has since been made into a mini rail and instead of the original idea of a Honda CR125 power plant it now has a Honda VF700 streetbike engine . It gets around very good. Even though it now weighs in at just under 1000lbs.

I'll try to get some updated pics, within a few days. I think it turned out pretty good.

Rushking, please start your own thread. It's considered a bit rude 'round here to jack somebody else's thread. If you start your own, I will move the above post for you. May I suggest you post in the Photo Gallery And Project Log section?
